We are seeking a Senior Database Administrator to join our Technology Platform team, dedicated to the Hospice business unit. You will lead the AWS database modernization effort for a recently migrated healthcare platform — driving the strategy for self-managed SQL Server on EC2 (migration to AWS RDS and/or version upgrade off SQL Server 2016 as it approaches end of support), modernizing the existing SSIS ETL and SSRS reporting estate, executing database cost optimization, and upskilling the existing Hospice SQL DBA team on cloud database operations.
This is a high-impact role shaping the database strategy for critical healthcare applications serving hospice patients across the United States.
- Lead the planning and execution of the SQL Server modernization on EC2: migration to AWS RDS (SQL Server) and/or in-place version upgrade off SQL Server 2016 ahead of end of support, including compatibility and upgrade testing
- Assess, migrate, and maintain the existing SSIS ETL packages and SSRS reports — either re-platforming to AWS-native ETL and reporting services (e.g., AWS Glue, DMS) or retaining and upgrading them on SQL Server on EC2
- Drive database cost optimization: right-sizing instances, evaluating Reserved Instances, storage tiering, and eliminating unnecessary licensing costs
- Upskill and mentor the existing Hospice SQL DBA team on AWS database operations, RDS management, and cloud best practices
- Establish cloud-native database monitoring, alerting, and performance baselines using Datadog and Cloud Watch
- Design and implement automated backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes using AWS Backup
- Perform query optimization, index management, and capacity planning
- Collaborate with the Dev Ops team on infrastructure automation (Terraform for RDS)
- Ensure HITRUST E1 compliance for all database systems (encryption, access controls, audit logging)
- Support the Hospice application team with database-related development needs
- Evaluate future database modernization opportunities (PostgreSQL, Aurora) for the 2027 roadmap
Minimum Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience in database administration
- Deep expertise with Microsoft SQL Server (2016+) performance tuning, high availability, disaster recovery
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server version upgrades and end-of-support migrations (e.g., off SQL Server 2016), including compatibility-level and upgrade testing
- Strong hands-on experience with SSIS (building, maintaining, and migrating ETL packages) and SSRS (report development and administration)
- Experience with AWS RDS (SQL Server) setup, migration, monitoring, Multi-AZ
- Experience with AWS-native ETL and data migration tooling (AWS DMS, AWS Glue) and/or a clear plan for modernizing SSIS-based ETL in AWS
- Experience with database migration projects (on-premises or EC2 to RDS, and in-place EC2 version upgrades)
- Strong understanding of backup/restore strategies, point-in-time recovery, cross-region replication
- Experience with monitoring tools (Datadog, Cloud Watch, SQL Server DMVs)
- Proficiency in T-SQL, stored procedures, and…
