Job Summary
Welder / Operator – 3rd shift (Sunday – Thursday, 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.). Responsible for welding, fabrication, and occasional operation of CNC machining and robotic equipment at Caterpillar’s Paving plant. The role requires adherence to AWS standards, use of GD&T, and ensuring quality and safety throughout production.
Responsibilities- Interpret metric drawings with geometric dimensioning and tolerances (GD&T) to set up fixtures, tack, and weld components in horizontal and flat positions using welding gun, cutting torches, carbon arc and other fabrication tools.
- Operate CNC machines and robots (e.g., CNC burning machines, plate rolls, machining centers, press brake) as needed.
- Perform inspections using measuring devices, blueprints, and statistical process control (SPC) documentation.
- Identify and troubleshoot machine and tooling problems.
- Utilize hand tools, grinders, and deburring equipment to remove sharp edges and finish parts.
- Follow all safety procedures to prevent injuries and maintain a safe work environment.
- Welding experience or currently completing a welding trade/technical degree.
- Ability to read fabrication blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Proficiency in American Welding Society (AWS –
D.1.1) certification and test to be passed prior to hire.
- Previous experience at Caterpillar Paving (Brooklyn Park).
- Heavy crane equipment experience.
- Prior operation of CNC machines.
- Experience with hand tools such as grinders, chisels, tip cleaners, and other fabrication tools.
- Experience with cutting torches and/or carbon arc gouging.
- Understanding of GD&T.
- Experience with Statistical Process Control (SPC).
- Ability to identify and communicate tooling and machine problems.
- Readability of standard work, prints, and ability to produce continuous improvement cards.
- Computer proficiency for production transactions.
- Understanding of metric measurement systems.
- Weld components per AWS standards and engineering prints.
- Set up and operate CNC machining equipment and robots following manufacturing documentation.
- Inspect parts using measuring devices and SPc methods.
- Use hand tools, grinders, and deburring tools to finish parts.
Exposure to welding fumes, machining chemicals, noise levels of ≥85 dB, overhead and jib cranes, hoists, magnets that may affect medical devices. Requires lifting up to 35 lbs, working at multiple heights, climbing, kneeling, squatting, and operating in tight spaces. Personal protective equipment includes hearing protection, safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, welding clothing, helmets, and grinding shields.
Schedule & PayShift: 3rd shift (Sunday – Thursday, 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.). Wage: $31.18 per hour (base $29.93 + $1.25 shift differential). Over‑time opportunities may be available on a voluntary basis.
