Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner/Clinician program
  • Experience: Minimum of two years of experience and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) experience in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
  • Licensure/Registration/Certification: Current License to practice nursing in the state of Minnesota;
    Certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner through NCC.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Able to diagnose, prescribe medications and interventions, order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, coordinate interdisciplinary health care team, plan and coordinate patient discharge, rehabilitation, home health care and follow-up while ensuring continuity of care within the hospital setting. Able to perform procedures within scope and collaboration agreement with physician partner. Able to be flexible to work within smaller team and be engaged in unit development and education.

Position Summary Statement

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner functions as an associate of the supervising group of Neonatologists in coordinating the patient care needs of the high-risk newborns within Regions Hospital. The NNP functions in an advanced practice provider role, responsible for complete 24 hour/day and 7 days/week management of the NICU LEVEL II patients. The practitioner has responsibility for assessment and management of patients including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and daily implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care.

The NNP is also a participant in and contributor to continuing education and staff development within perinatal services as well as involvement in outreach programs provided to outlying hospitals.

Job Duties and Tasks
  • Responsible for the primary care of neonates (age 0 to 30 days) in the NICU LEVEL II
    • Perform a complete history: elicit records and interpret a complete health history to include obstetric, medical, family and psychosocial needs.
    • Perform a complete newborn physical examination, assessment of gestational age and can distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.
    • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as necessary, order appropriate lab tests and x-rays, interpret findings and consult with physicians as needed.
    • Based on physical examination and other data, formulate and implement a plan of care with expected outcomes; formulate and document a problem list accordingly. Evaluate and revise daily plan as needed. Record patient history, plan of care, orders, and progress notes, ongoing evaluation and treatments. Participate in department team talks and daily patient safety huddles and rounds.
    • Write prescriptions as needed in accordance with the Minnesota Board of Nursing guidelines. Communicate with attending physician, parents, nursing staff and other members of the health care team appropriate information about the newborn’s diagnosis, plan of care and prognosis.
