Introduction
The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is recruiting for a Medical Records Specialist 1 to join our Health Services Unit team at the Corrigan Correctional Center in Montville, Connecticut with coverage to Brooklyn Correctional Institution in Brooklyn, CT.

Position HighlightsThis position is full-time, following a first shift schedule, 40 hours per week, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday.
Responsibilities- Maintain a file of medical records such as daily admissions and discharges, daily census, case histories, results of diagnostic tests, signed releases of information, medical summaries and abstracts.
- Inspect reports and records for omissions and errors.
- Prepare statistical reports on matters such as classification of disease, laboratory, dental, X‑ray and physiotherapy activities.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Assist in maintaining a file of medical records (daily admissions and discharges, daily census, case histories, results of diagnostic tests, signed releases of information, medical summaries and abstracts).
- Inspect reports and records for omissions and errors.
- Code and file a full range of diagnoses according to anatomical systems, in conformance with accepted international classification systems (i.e., ICD, WHO, DSM‑III, DRG, etc.).
- Prepare statistical reports on classification of disease, laboratory, dental, X‑ray and physiotherapy activities.
- Prepare death certificates, burial permits and other related records.
- Prepare reports to state and federal agencies as required.
- Attend probate court hearings and give testimony.
- Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology and human anatomy; medical coding principles and techniques with particular emphasis on International Classification of Disease procedures; principles of statistical data tabulation; office systems and procedures; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications - General ExperienceFour (4) years of experience in the maintenance of medical records and preparation of statistical reports.
Preferred QualificationsExperience working with electronic health records; experience scanning and importing documents to EHR; experience processing requests to obtain/disclose protected health information; experience with computer software, including Microsoft Excel; experience in a correctional facility or hospital setting; experience maintaining health records in accordance with HIPAA; experience processing subpoenas or court orders which may entail court appearances.
Special RequirementsPersons having responsibility for supervising or observing the behavior of inmates or custodial clients will be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
