Head Start Teacher Aide
This position serves as a Teacher's Aide/Substitute as needed for Grand Street Settlement Early Childhood classrooms. Responsible for assisting with the supervision of all children, implementing classroom activities, works cooperatively with and supporting other classroom staff and volunteers, and assists with the general maintenance of the classroom to insure the health and safety of the children of the program.
Minimum – High School Diploma or equivalence, some college credits preferred. At least one year experience working with children ages 0-5 and families. Ability to work with children and families with special developmental, social or cultural needs. Ability to maintain written records and manage time to ensure the completion of assigned work. Ability to interpret documents such as safety regulations, policies and procedures.
Ability to foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with participating families. Basic computer literacy in email, Microsoft Office.
Under the direct supervision of the Center Director, the Teacher's Aide/ Substitute shall be responsible for:
- Supervision all children's indoor and outdoor activities while incorporating positive guidance techniques. Assist with implementing a child-centered curriculum to its fidelity and learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation to promote development in all domains for children of all abilities.
- Collaborates with the classroom team in the preparation of daily lesson plans and individualization for children. Assist with collecting daily anecdotes and write observations for children. Assist with assessing children with Teaching Strategies Gold online three times a year
- Provide positive guidance and discipline supporting children as they acquire readiness skills for kindergarten and beyond
- Assist with creating and maintaining a positive working relationship with parents, providing positive feedback on a child's ongoing developmental success and challenges. Encourages parent participation in staff-parent conferences and home visits discussing their child's development and education
- Assist with maintaining regular contact with parents and complete appropriate documentation;
Direct developmental concerns to Lead Teacher and may participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings with Family Advocate, Health, Nutrition and Disabilities Coordinator - Assisting Teacher in completion of attendance, health checks, home correspondence, home visit forms, accident/ incident reports, referrals and safety inspections. Assist with requesting supplies as needed and participate in classroom/program inventory as requested
- Work with teaching team to analyze child outcomes on a classroom basis two- three times a year
- Participate in coaching opportunities and professional development training development
- Flexible schedule to substitute for Assistant Teachers and other staff members as needed
- Ability to lift 35 pounds
- Other duties as assigned
