Cosmetology Specialist
New York Edge is seeking passionate and enthusiastic people to fill the role of Cosmetology Specialist. In this role, you will organize, lead, and promote interest in various cosmetology. The instructor will serve as a model and a source of inspiration for students and aspiring cosmetologists. Cosmetology specialists are responsible for sequential lesson planning based on the New York Edge curriculum, classroom preparation for cosmetology teaching and holding students to established standards, and adapting the New York State Arts Learning Standards to create an engaging and rewarding activity that encourages participation in New York Edge programs.
Essential job functions include establishing and enforcing rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible, organizing, leading, and promoting interest in arts activities such as cosmetology, organizing performance groups and directing their rehearsals, establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicating those objectives to students. Additionally, the specialist must ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the student's needs.
They are also responsible for preparing materials and classrooms for class activities, explaining principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities and demonstrating the use of materials and equipment, evaluating activities to determine if they are producing desired results, adapting teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests, and progressive development of student skills leading to a final project.
Required skills include being knowledgeable and skilled in a variety of cosmetology, prior experience teaching and instructing youth preferred, following a curriculum, being responsible, reliable, and punctual, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, instructing, managing, and supervising students in the classroom and the beauty space, teaching a variety of courses in nail technology, hair styling, and other beautifying arts while lecturing on the theory, techniques, and terminology used in the cosmetology profession, organizing a program of practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills used by hairstylists, manicurists, make-up artists, and other workers in the beauty industry, preparing an outline of instructional lesson plan and assembling materials to be presented, evaluating the student's understanding of the learning objectives via careful performance and execution of the hands-on activities, maintaining desirable classroom conditions and a student-oriented approach, and being able to walk up and down stairs and lift or move objects/materials as needed.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent required, some college preferred, a minimum of one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience, a minimum of one year of teaching experience, passion for New York Edge's mission, and demonstrated interest in education and youth development. Candidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are also preferred.
Work schedule is 9-15 hours per week, Monday through Friday -- 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm. The cosmetology specialist must report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration. At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
