High School Spanish Teacher (9–12)

Brooklyn Ascend High School seeks a High School Spanish Teacher (9–12) to deliver rigorous, college-preparatory world language instruction across Spanish I, Spanish II, and AP Spanish Language & Culture.

Spanish at Brooklyn Ascend High School is a vertically aligned pathway that builds linguistic proficiency, cultural fluency, and intellectual confidence. Instruction emphasizes authentic communication, analytical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding, preparing scholars to engage meaningfully with the Spanish-speaking world and to succeed in college-level coursework.

This teacher builds foundational fluency in Grade 9, deepens academic language and analytical skill in Grade 10, and prepares advanced scholars for college credit through AP Spanish Language & Culture.

Core Responsibilities
  • Teach Spanish I, Spanish II, and AP Spanish Language & Culture as assigned.
  • Design instruction aligned to college-preparatory and Advanced Placement standards.
  • Develop scholars' listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency.
  • Emphasize authentic communication, thematic exploration, and cultural analysis.
  • Prepare scholars for the AP Spanish Language & Culture Examination with strong outcomes.
  • Differentiate instruction while maintaining high expectations for fluency and rigor.
  • Guide Spanish I scholars in developing a Spanish Language Portfolio presented at the Celebration of Language event.
  • Lead Spanish II scholars through the Cultural Immersion Project, including independent research and seminar facilitation in Spanish.
  • Prepare AP scholars for the Investigative Oral Presentation (IOP) and the AP Examination in May.
  • Support public demonstrations of learning that reflect linguistic growth and cultural competence.
  • Participate in weekly Humanities data meetings focused on scholar performance and instructional refinement.
  • Analyze AP benchmarks and internal assessments to inform instructional decisions.
  • Engage fully in observation and feedback cycles.
  • Implement coaching feedback with professionalism and urgency.
  • Contribute to vertical curriculum alignment across 9–12 Spanish.
  • Maintain a structured and respectful classroom environment aligned to school-wide expectations.
  • Partner with the Dean of Culture & Community to reinforce scholar accountability.
  • Serve as an advisor as assigned, supporting scholar identity and post-secondary planning.
  • Foster intellectual curiosity, confidence, and global awareness.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Spanish, World Language Education, or related field.
  • 2+ years of secondary teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in spoken and written Spanish.
  • Experience teaching AP Spanish Language & Culture.
  • Demonstrated record of strong AP or college-preparatory outcomes.
  • Experience in a college-preparatory or charter school environment.
  • Valid New York State certification in Spanish or World Languages 7–12.

Compensation

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Typical salary range for experienced high school world language teachers in NYC charter networks starts at $80,000, depending on certification and demonstrated outcomes.

Location

Brooklyn, NY. This is a full-time, in-person role requiring daily presence on campus and participation in school-wide programming and faculty collaboration.
