Overview

We are hiring a Group Process Safety Manager. This hybrid role can sit in either our Syracuse NY, Albany NY, Brooklyn NY or Waltham MA office.

As Group Process Safety Manager, you'll provide strategic leadership and governance for Process Safety across National Grid. Your primary responsibility is to develop and embed a robust Group-level Process Safety Management System that aligns with regulatory requirements and industry best practices, ensuring consistent standards and effective risk control across all Business Units (BUs).

You'll act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, support the Executive Safety, Health & Sustainability Subcommittee, and collaborate with BU teams to guide implementation, without assuming direct operational responsibility. You'll also contribute to third-line assurance activities and support second-line efforts where additional independence or technical expertise is required.

In partnership with the Policy and Reporting Manager, you'll help establish systems for accurate data collection, trending, and performance reporting, enabling informed decision-making and proactive risk management.

What You'll Do

As Group Process Safety Manager, you'll be instrumental in shaping and executing the NG Process Safety strategy across the group. This high-impact role blends technical leadership, strategic oversight, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure the safety and integrity of our assets and operations.

  • Lead the development of Group-level Process Safety Management System (PSMS) aligned with industry standards, recommended good practices, risk-based process safety (RBPS), and regulatory frameworks, including OSHA PSM (29 CFR ) and EPA RMP.
  • Integrate Process Safety into the broader Safety, Health and Wellbeing Management System, ensuring alignment with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Lead and facilitate advanced hazard analysis and risk assessment including PHA, LOPA, SIS work, QRAs, ALARP studies to support Business Units in risk identification and reduction.
  • Influence senior leadership through risk-based decision-making, including the application of ALARP principles.
  • Support the development of BU-specific Process Safety programs to align with Group strategy and standards.
  • Develop and lead the Group's Process Safety Assurance strategy, collaborating with second-line functions and engaging Corporate Audit and external specialists as needed to support third-line assurance activities and reviewing CoA processes.
  • Support second-line assurance activities to provide additional independence or technical expertise.
  • Provide strategic input into major capital project reviews when requested, ensuring Process Safety risks are managed throughout the asset lifecycle.
  • Support annual performance evaluations and contribute to executive-level governance reporting by offering expert advice on the effectiveness and robustness of internal process safety risk controls.
  • Provide expert support in investigating significant Process Safety incidents, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and corrective actions, including sharing of lessons learned.
  • Collaborate with Data & Reporting teams to establish systems for accurate data collection, analysis, and trending.
  • Partner with the Incident Management System team to enhance data visualization and reporting of process safety events for business units and enterprise-wide insights.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor across NG, offering expert guidance to operational leaders and stakeholders on process safety risk identification & reduction.
  • Champion the development of Process Safety knowledge, mentoring Group peers and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Represent NG in industry forums, regulatory engagements, and collaborative networks to influence standards and share best practices.
  • Support the development and revision of Process Safety policies and procedures, ensuring they are current, compliant, and aligned with strategic goals.
  • Assess organisational compliance with current legislation and proactively evaluate the potential implications of emerging legal and regulatory changes.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies & systems that enhance Process Safety performance & reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Group Risk & Resilience team to support emergency response and crisis management frameworks.
What You'll Bring

Proven experience in Process Safety Engineering within high-hazard U.S. industries such as thermal power generation, oil & gas, LNG storage, LNG trucking, petrochemical, or chemical manufacturing.

Strong understanding of risk-based process safety, including CCPS guidelines and U.S. regulatory frameworks, including OSHA PSM (29 CFR ) and EPA RMP requirements.

Minimum of 4 years' experience in industrial and operational environments, preferably with at least 2 years in an EHS or Process Safety leadership role.

Familiarity with safety-critical systems, asset integrity, and operational risk management in energy generation, transmission, or distribution.
