Assistant Civil Engineer & Level I-III Series
The Track Engineer will provide timely, accurate engineering support for Maintenance of Way (MOW), Capital Construction, and C&D projects involving tracks, switches, third rail systems, ADA station upgrades, and platform rehabilitation. The role includes performing engineering design, field surveys, construction support, shop drawing reviews, material evaluations, and maintaining standard track drawings and specifications. The position also assists in investigations of derailments and other track-related incidents to ensure system safety and reliability.
Under direction, the engineer will plan, coordinate, and direct the design and construction of complex railway engineering projects. Responsibilities include preparing and reviewing engineering drawings, writing technical specifications, providing field inspections, delivering construction recommendations, verifying safety measures, and performing CADD drafting. The role may involve supervising subordinate staff. An engineering degree is required.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare designs for special trackwork, switches, and track components.
- Conduct field engineering surveys and provide construction assistance.
- Review shop drawings and perform first-article material evaluations.
- Maintain and update Standard Track Drawings and Specifications.
- Support derailment and incident investigations.
- Provide technical support to Procurement for inspection issues.
- Deliver field support including inspections, design sketches, and safety verification.
- Perform CADD drafting and prepare contract specifications.
- Coordinate large/complex railway engineering projects.
Education and Experience:
Assistant Civil Engineer
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
Civil Engineer I - III
A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License and four years of full-time experience in civil engineering. A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college will be accepted as equivalent to one year of the full-time experience in civil engineering.
* To be considered for Civil Engineering I-III, TA Applicants must be in a permanent civil service status in the title(s) of Job Title or be on an established list for said title(s). If you are on an established list, your list number must be reachable to be considered for appointment.
In addition to above qualification requirements, to be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
License Requirements:
A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York may be required for certain assignments. If required, this license must be maintained for duration of appointment.
Desired
Skills:
- Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., Micro Station) and MS Office.
- Ability to use surveying equipment (preferred).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge of concrete and steel structural inspection.
- Familiarity with construction design and multi-agency requirements.
- Ability to read and write technical drawings and correspondence.
- Engineering degree required.
Selection Method:
Based on evaluation of education, skills, experience, interview, and written assessment. All selected candidates will be subject to a full background investigation that includes employment and education. Discrepancies may lead to dismissal.
