ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Creates lesson plans and conducts communication classes at day program sites and in the community.
- Orders and maintains supplies.
- Assists programs in organizing staffing, transportation and logistics for community based activities.
- Creates compelling and attractive flyers to advertise upcoming opportunities.
- Develops and implements communication curriculum that encourages participation by individuals of all ability levels.
- Works with other specialists to facilitate participation in activities for persons served who communicate with American Sign Language (ASL) or other adaptive methods.
- Interprets for persons served and staff members who communicate with ASL as needed.
- Identifies deaf community organizations to collaborate with, and maintains communication for the purposes of assisting ASL users to take part in activities.
- Provides training to staff and community members in ASL and other alternate communication methods.
- Implements universal precautions at all times.
- Participates in in-service training programs as requested.
- Provides supervision and guidance to Direct Support Professionals during communication activities and community events.
- Keeps abreast of changes in the field.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
- Fluency in American Sign Language
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organization skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and appropriate software
- Good interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, individuals served, employees, parents and outside contacts
- Ability and willingness to adjust work schedule to attend and facilitate events that occur outside of regular business hours
- Ability and willingness to travel to various program sites
- Bachelor’s Degree and/or Certification in ASL Interpreting.
- At least six months experience with persons with disabilities.
