THE OPPORTUNITY
The Center for Justice Innovation (the Center) works with communities and justice systems to advance equity, increase safety, and help individuals and communities thrive. Since 2011, the Brownsville Community Justice Center (BCJC), an operating project of the Center, has worked to address systemic inequality, enhance public safety, and create opportunities for youth and residents to lead in building a safer, more equitable community.
BCJC is seeking a Coordinator, Community Safety. Reporting to the Program Manager, Community Safety the Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating BCJCs' peer mentorship and youth violence prevention efforts. The coordinator will work in close collaboration with the Community Initiatives team, ensuring that youth and community participants receive holistic, support that fosters safety, healing, personal growth, stability, and long-term success. The Coordinator will provide supervision and coaching to a team of peer mentors with support from the Program Manager and coordinates a range of youth violence prevention programs.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage day-to-day operations of youth violence prevention programming including peer mentorship and gun diversion;
- Supervise a team of peer mentors including weekly group and individual supervision;
- Provide professional development and professional mentorship to peer mentors;
- Co-develop and implement professional development plans with peer mentors;
- Coordinate ongoing training in facilitation, youthwork, and mentorship for the peer mentor staff;
- Provide mentorship and advocacy to youth impacted by community violence and criminal legal systems;
- Facilitate youth workshops and group programs focused on violence prevention and community safety;
- Collaborate with the Community Initiatives team to develop and implement youth led and community place keeping projects;
- Build community support for the program (including faith-based community leaders, residents, businesses, and community organizations that provide services needed by program participants);
- Coordinate, lead, and support regular mobilization and youth led community projects in support of community safety goals;
- Coordinate responses to community violence in support of youth participants and community;
- Assure systematic recordkeeping on program performance indicators, participant caseload and program highlights;
- Maintain data integrity and accuracy, submitting timely and complete monthly program reports via prescribed tool/mechanism;
- Attend community-based meetings, community events, and activities;
- Serve as a representative of the organization and program, as needed; and
- Additional relevant tasks, as needed.
The candidate should be an enthusiastic, energetic self-starter with a passion for preventing gun violence. Knowledge of violence prevention, community engagement and organizing, and youth engagement and support strategies. Experience working with youth impacted by violence, and knowledge of the Brownsville community. Excellent communication skills, commitment to working towards positive community change, and interest in learning new skills and information are a must for this position.
Position Type: Full-time, Monday - Friday from 10:00am - 6:00pm, working evenings and weekends. Schedule may be flexible, changing, and include late nights.
Position Location: Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $59,700 - $70,000 and is commensurate with experience.
