Position: SUPERVISOR CARPENTER

Supervisor Carpenter

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Supervisor Carpenter who will:

  • Supervise the work of carpenters and other assigned personnel in the installation and repair work involving rough, finish and general carpentry; installation, repair, replacement of flooring, doors, building hardware, trim, window frames, sashes, partitions, drop ceilings, metal framing of wall and other related building components.
  • Make decisions related to work procedures; prepare work schedules and make work assignments.
  • Conduct field inspections in connection with carpentry installations and components of systems relative to work progress or need for alterations, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Prepare job orders and tool and material requisitions.
  • Supervise the complete operation of the department shop; consult with staff personnel, contractors, inspectors, and manufacturers' representatives in connection with department work.
  • Prepare reports and keep records.
  • Supervise and oversee carpentry work within homeless shelters and other related facilities.
  • Ensure all projects meet NYC DOB, DOH, and FDNY safety standards and regulations.
  • Coordinate with other trades and departments to ensure project completion.
  • Review and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams to plan construction projects.
  • Manage a team of carpenters, assigning tasks and monitoring progress.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure quality control and adherence to specifications.
  • Address and resolve any construction issues promptly.
  • Maintain inventory of carpentry tools and materials.
  • Prepare and maintain records of work performed and supplies used

Proposed salary range for this position: $436.59 (Daily). Hours/

Schedule:

Monday – Friday 8am – 3:30pm.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Seven (7) years of recent, satisfactory, full time, paid experience as a carpenter, at least two (2) years of which must have been spent in duties of a supervisory nature; or 2. A satisfactory equivalent.

Preferred Skills

- Proven experience in carpentry within commercial living dwellings.

- Extensive knowledge of NYC DOB, DOH, and FDNY regulations.

- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a team.

- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

- Proficiency in reading blueprints and technical drawings.

- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, if necessary.

- Familiarity with the specific needs and challenges of working in homeless services facilities.

- Experience in a government or public service environment.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
