Job SummaryWe are seeking a motivated, experienced individual who will conduct investigations of confirmed fraud and suspicious activity requiring a high‑risk review and ensure losses and potential risks are mitigated. The Lead Financial Crimes Investigator conducts and makes decisions on investigations and/or reviews investigations for quality alerts related to suspicious activity or customer transaction and behavior patterns, and identifies potential onboarding and retention risk.
Works independently with limited supervision.
- Mentor and train newly hired investigators; act as subject‑matter expert within the department.
- Conduct and make decisions on investigations and/or reviews for quality alerts related to suspicious activity or customer transaction and behavior patterns, identifying potential onboarding and retention risk.
- Verify/validate customer information and transaction activity via internal and external systems based on scenario or customer type.
- Demonstrate strong investigative and analytical skills; formulate and clearly articulate a supportable rationale behind the outcome of an investigation/review (e.g., SAR or customer retention decision) while complying with departmental procedures.
- Partner with Lines of Business to clarify and document risk factors associated with a client or banking relationship and resolve matters where supporting documentation does not adequately describe risk.
- Develop strong rapport with Compliance/LOB partners.
- Identify and escalate information that appears conflicting or inconsistent with a customer's profile.
- Identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness and/or efficiency of policies, procedures, and processes and make recommendations to management; participate in implementation.
- Perform other duties as assigned; duties may change or new ones may be assigned at any time.
High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, criminal justice, intelligence studies, or related field preferred.
Work ExperienceAt least 2+ years of investigative, relevant banking, customer contact, and/or law‑enforcement experience required.
Licenses & Certifications- Certified Anti‑Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) – preferred.
- Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) – preferred.
- Other related industry certification – preferred.
- Knowledge of disclosure of information about the organization, its business activities, and employees.
- Understanding of risk assessment and control practices for various types of risk.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas and information.
- Collaborative techniques to work with a variety of individuals and groups constructively.
- High accuracy and precision in completing tasks.
- Basic knowledge of product and service groups and the ability to apply that knowledge appropriately.
- Ability to accomplish tasks in spite of current circumstances and utilize resources to exceed planned outcomes.
- Analytical tools and techniques to determine root causes of problems and develop alternative solutions.
- Decision‑making expertise and associated tools and techniques.
- Knowledge of financial crimes policies and procedures, and the ability to prevent or report financial crime activities.
- Experience with financial crime detection, addressing, and prevention tools and techniques.
- Understanding of the regulatory environment and ability to help comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Data gathering, reporting, and analysis tools and processes.
- Knowledge of anti‑money laundering laws, regulations, and guidance (BSA, KYC, etc.).

Compensation and BenefitsBase salary in the range of $52,000–$80,000 annually, with eligibility for incentive compensation. Eligible for benefits as provided by Key Bank.
