Description
The Wastewater Operator III performs technical work in operating and maintaining large wastewater facilities and overseeing the operation of the regional wastewater facilities.
Wastewater Plant Operator III $29.73 per hour and must have Class A Wastewater License on date of hire.
Wastewater Plant Operator II $25.49 per hour with a Class B Wastewater License and must be able to obtain Class A within 14 months of the date of hire.
Examples of Duties

The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise to balance the workload.
  • Operates, maintains and makes minor repairs to a variety of types and sizes of wastewater facilities and appurtenances.
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly operating reports for timely submission to regulatory agencies.
  • Collects various wastewater samples for laboratory testing and analyses; reviews and interprets results; makes modifications to treatment and other processes to comply with codes, rules and regulations.
  • Assigns and coordinates the work of other team members.
  • Provides on-the-job training to subordinate team members.
  • Oversees the ordering and application of chlorine for properly disinfecting wastewater in accordance with established guidelines while ensuring all chlorine systems are operated and maintained properly.
  • Evaluates safety problems, makes minor repairs and modifications, and coordinates time consuming or difficult repair or modification with other internal departments.
  • Investigates and resolve complaints and problems with customer, the public and other staff members.
  • Provides input for annual evaluations on subordinate personnel.
  • Assists the Wastewater Plants Supervisor and Chief Operator in coordinating the daily operations of wastewater facilities to ensure operational and maintenance practices comply with all permit conditions and rules and regulations of federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinates various wastewater laboratory testing to ensure sampling is performed properly and in accordance with operating permits. Reviews and interprets results. Assists with the modification to treatment and other processes to comply with codes, rules and regulations.
  • Reviews facilities operational reports and performance data for accuracy and correctness and to determine the treatment provided and required to increase efficiency, to improve performance, to protect the environment and maintain public health. Assists in the developing, implementing and updating of standard operating procedures and guidelines pertaining to wastewater operations, sampling and maintenance.
  • Ensures that safety and fire equipment is updated and operational.
  • Makes recommendations pertaining to operational, organizational, and administrative systems modifications and/or improvements.
  • Assists in the preparation and makes recommendations for annual and program budgets for the Wastewater Branch.
  • Provides operational, administrative, and safety training on all aspects of wastewater operation, maintenance and safety.
  • Prioritizes work assignments and repair requests to maintain system reliability.
  • Assists in solving difficult and complex operational problems at wastewater facilities.
  • Assists in the preparation of technical bid specifications for equipment, supplies, materials, and services needed for wastewater facilities.
  • Prepares detailed reports, correspondence, and documents. Interprets results, assists with modifications to comply with codes, rules and regulations.
  • Maintains cleans, start up, shut down and run the dewatering equipment in a clean and orderly condition. Makes equipment adjustments, lubrications and minor repairs. Participates in major repairs to equipment.
  • Financial Responsibilities:
    Accountable for inventory/property management; and make recommendations that impact the budget.
  • Regular attendance required.
Emergency Response
County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Employees may request an exemption from this requirement by submitting the appropriate exemption form, subject to review and approval.
Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).
