Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Environmental Engineer
City of Brooksville, FL is seeking a Plant Operator to manage daily operations of drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities.
Job Summary / OverviewA highly technical role responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing, and ensuring regulatory compliance of treatment facilities. The position may involve emergency call‑outs, nights, weekends and holidays.
Essential Job Functions- Operate, maintain, repair, and report on treatment plants and pumping facilities.
- Log instrument readings, schedule analyses, and take laboratory samples as required.
- Lubricate, adjust and maintain pumps, mixers, aerators, measuring equipment, and other electro‑mechanical equipment.
- Handle public inquiries and service requests.
- Perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Distribute and replenish process chemicals.
- Conduct operational laboratory tests as directed by the supervisor.
- Work safely, diligently and responsibly while completing assigned duties.
- Train or assist with supervision of other employees, if assigned.
- Perform other duties as required at the discretion of the City.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of regulations and regulatory changes related to assigned facilities.
- Knowledge of hazardous chemical transportation and handling regulations.
- Experience with operation and maintenance of electrical‑mechanical equipment in wastewater/water treatment and pumping facilities; knowledge of safety practices.
- Knowledge of chemical and biological processes used in wastewater/water treatment.
- Experience operating hand tools, power tools, light vehicles, standard transmission vehicles, tractors and dump trucks.
- Ability to work extended periods in confined areas and all weather conditions.
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and work on above‑ground platforms.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to distinguish colors.
- Verbal communication clarity.
- Read, comprehend, implement and complete written and/or oral directions in English.
- Legible writing.
- Effective interaction with co‑workers to fulfill job requirements.
- Proficiency with basic arithmetic.
- Perform assigned duties timely, carefully, and complying with safety rules.

Physical Skills
:
Use of both hands; 20/40 vision (at least one eye); ability to hear, understand, and verbally communicate in English at normal conversational levels. Corrective devices acceptable.
Education, Training and Experience
:
Associate degree or completion of specialized water and wastewater training programs. 1–2 years of plant operations experience. Specific experience with installation, operation, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment preferred.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations
:
Florida DEP Class C Wastewater or Drinking Water Operator Certification required. Valid Class E driver’s license required. CDL – Class B with tanker endorsement preferred.
