Position: Engineer (0511) (Hybrid)

Help protect one of Florida’s most vital resources — water — with a career at the Southwest Florida Water Management District (District).

The District is a government agency whose mission is to protect water resources, minimize flood risks, and ensure the public’s water needs are met. We serve a population of nearly 6 million people in west-central Florida.

Position Overview

Within the Environmental Resource Permit (ERP) Bureau, you will conduct professional level technical and administrative engineering work supporting the ERP Compliance Section. The majority of time will be spent on post‑permitting compliance, with close coordination with the ERP Evaluation Section. The role requires applying engineering principles, project management, scientific findings and environmental laws to evaluate, plan, design and complete water‑related projects to ensure compliance with regulations and policies.

This role is considered hybrid: employees must live in Florida and will work on‑site and remotely as required.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure that activities are brought into compliance with state and District rules, including transferring construction permits to the operation phase, resolving permit condition violations, managing expired permits, and addressing unauthorized construction activities.
  • Work closely with Regulatory Support staff (administrative and field services) to accomplish tasks as outlined in rules, procedures and guidelines.
  • Travel to site meetings in designated District counties.
  • Participate in ERP Bureau projects under the direction of the ERP Compliance Manager and perform other departmental duties as assigned.
  • During major storm events and other declared emergencies, assist in emergency‑management activities as needed, which may include normal work functions or additional emergency support functions.
Working Conditions

In‑office work occurs in a standard office environment. Field work may involve work in remote and undeveloped areas, adverse weather, and exposure to extreme elements and pests. Physical requirements include bending, lifting, reaching, and driving. Employees may be on call during emergencies.
