Position: Traffic Signal Technician I

Description Responsible for performing skilled technical work involving the maintenance, repair, installation, inspection and operation of traffic signal systems.

Examples of Duties

The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered all all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

  • Performs activities necessary to maintain, upgrade and install traffic signal installations in conformance with guidelines set forth by Federal, State and County standards.
  • Performs engineering studies related to signalization and safe traffic control such as turning movement counts, accumulated daily totals, vehicle delay, and speed and curve slope studies.
  • May perform traffic technician duties.
  • Occasionally performs streetlight maintenance as required and assists with road closure devices and barricades as required.
  • May perform "on call" duties at any time of the day or night as required for emergency response.
  • Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or other management personnel.
Emergency Response

County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Employees may request an exemption from this requirement by submitting the appropriate exemption form, subject to review and approval.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School graduate or equivalent Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working with electrical and electronic devices or related field.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations
  • Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License or obtain withing six (6) months of employment and be insurable by the current insurance carrier.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment:
    • Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Certification.
    • IMSA Traffic Signal/Technician Level I Certification and Signs Markings Level I.
    • ISMA Signal Inspector.
  • Must have or be able to obtain certification within three (3) months of employment in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c:
      Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS)
    • IS-200.b: ICs for Single Resources & Initial Action Incidents
    • IS-700.b:
      An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County's discretion.

Required Competencies Knowledge Of
  • Installation of traffic control devices per Federal, State and County guidelines.
  • Methods, practices, techniques and trade materials of the electrical trade and associated equipment.
  • Basic troubleshooting capabilities.
Ability To
  • Signal maintenance and operation.
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of fiber optic cable and other communication cabling
  • Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams and electrical schematics for the purpose of installation, repair and through shotting of electrical equipment.
  • Safely operating bucket truck and various other heavy pieces of equipment.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers, supervisors and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
