Position: EQUIPMENT OPERATOR - 55008887

Equipment Operator

Department of Transportation, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)

Salary: $1,482.72–$1,918.82 biweekly ($38,550.78–$49,889.24 annually)

Location: 16411 Spring Hill Dr.

Responsibilities
  • Operate various small and medium equipment (front‑end loader, skid steer, grader, lift equipment, tractor‑trailer, drainage vacuum truck, small bulldozer, asphalt repair truck) for bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Perform minor maintenance and servicing of equipment, including checking fluids, brakes, tire pressure, and cleaning.
  • Use hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Perform tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Implement Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) and assist crew activity reports.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations and standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skills in operating hand and power tools, and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment; maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures; communicate verbally and in writing; develop effective working relationships; lift, carry and handle up to 50 pounds; perform physical activities such as stooping, climbing, squatting, pushing, pulling, crawling, bending; work outdoors in various weather conditions on varied terrains; work independently; stand for extended periods.

Job‑Related Requirements
  • Must respond to emergencies and be "on call" (24‑hour duty) when necessary.
  • Be ready to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and maintain on‑duty status with a valid Class B CDL with air brakes.
  • Obtain and maintain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year.
  • Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Valid Class B CDL with air brakes and an acceptable driving record per Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
