Job Summary In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for accurately calculating costs associated with fabricating and manufacturing structural steel components for a variety of high-profile projects across industries such as oil and gas, energy infrastructure, shipbuilding, and aerospace. Responsibilities- Prepare comprehensive and competitive cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects, covering labor, materials, equipment, and overhead costs.
- Review blueprints, architectural drawings, structural specifications, and contract documents to understand project scope, requirements, and potential challenges.
- Perform detailed material take-offs for steel shapes, plates, bolts, welding consumables, and ancillary items.
- Accurately estimate fabrication labor hours, equipment usage, and costs from sub-contractors.
- Collaborate with sales, project management, engineering, and production teams to gather necessary information, clarify project scope, and develop winning bid strategies.
- Solicit and evaluate quotes from material suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring optimal pricing and availability.
- Identify potential risks and opportunities related to each bid, incorporating contingencies as needed.
- Maintain and update estimating databases, cost libraries, and historical data for continuous process improvements.
- Prepare clear, organized, and professional bid proposals for client submission.
- Stay informed about industry trends, material costs, and fabrication techniques to ensure competitive and accurate estimates.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil or Structural Engineering, or a related field preferred; relevant trade experience and certifications may substitute.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as an Estimator within structural steel fabrication or closely related heavy industrial/construction fields.
- Proven track record of accurately estimating complex structural steel projects.
- Proficiency with ERP systems and estimating software such as AutoCAD, Excel, Fab Suite, Tekla Structures, Bluebeam, and Word.
- Strong knowledge of AISC standards, welding codes (AWS), API standards (API 4F, API 8C), ABS, DNV, ISO
9001:2015, and similar industry benchmarks. - Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and mathematical proficiency.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities, capable of managing multiple bids simultaneously.
- Knowledge of production processes, fabrication techniques, and erection methodologies for structural steel is highly desirable.
