JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
Delta Utilities is seeking a Specialist, Engineering Gas to design basic and intermediate natural gas distribution and transmission system designs. The role manages small and medium‑sized projects from design through completion, including preparation of plans, specifications, permits, contracts and coordination with customers and government agencies. The position works under the close supervision of an engineer or engineering manager.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Design basic and intermediate gas distribution facilities and associated support systems, including cathodic protection.
- Prepare long‑range capacity piping plans, easements, permits, bid packages, contracts, relocation and letter agreements, redline/greenline proposals, and regulatory proposals for service area certification and main replacement program documentation.
- Establish cost estimates, material specifications, schedules, and conduct system capacity and pressure study modeling and analyses.
- Create construction drawings for facilities and submit required permits and approvals.
- Conduct economic feasibility studies and recommend customer contributions for new loads and system replacement work.
- Prepare and deliver presentations to customers and management.
- Manage project deadlines to ensure timely and budget‑conscious completion.
- Coordinate efforts with customers and government agencies.
- Provide design support to local gas operations and develop operational procedures.
- High school education or equivalent knowledge of English, basic mathematics, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Associate Specialist, Engineering Gas: up to 2 years of experience in construction, utility operations, or related roles.
- Specialist, Engineering Gas: 5 years of experience in construction, utility operations, or related roles.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Comprehend, document, calculate, visualize, and analyze technical information.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of company safety rules within 6 months of employment.
- Identify abnormal operating conditions and suggest corrective actions.
- Continuously acquire and maintain skills as technology evolves.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of management and associates, fostering a team environment.
- Represent the company professionally in meetings with public and private entities.
- Collaborate across functional boundaries to improve business processes.
- Operate PC software proficiently (word processing, presentation tools, spreadsheets).
- Use ArcGIS, hydraulic modeling software, AutoCAD, and related engineering programs.
- Motivate self, accomplish tasks, and achieve goals with minimal supervision.
- Apply creative and innovative problem‑solving techniques.
- Demonstrate effective project management and time‑management skills.
- Multi‑task and manage several projects simultaneously.
- Use initiative, good judgment, and tact to complete assigned tasks.
- Apply knowledge of company policies, procedures, DOT CFR 192 regulations, and engineering principles.
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
- Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Operate personal computer, copy machine, and other office equipment.
- Exert in excess of 30 lb of force occasionally and 10 lb frequently to move objects.
- Detect natural gas odor.
- Sit, stand, or walk for long periods.
- Operate a motor vehicle for multi‑hour trips; enter and exit vehicle unassisted.
- Wear and operate personal protective equipment daily.
- Perform job duties in a normal, clean office environment with normal noise levels.
- Work predominantly while standing or sitting.
- Handle daily weather conditions and occasional emergency situations.
- Work regular hours with occasional overtime and rotating shifts if required.
- Respond to emergency calls or callouts and occasionally return to work while off duty.
- Undergo random drug screening as required for DOT drivers and safety‑sensitive positions. Remain in the service area during emergency events and support restoration efforts as required.
