The Nurse Supervisor provides supervision of all patient care areas in the hospital. The Nurse Supervisor has working knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures and applies independent judgement. The role serves as a managerial and clinical link between the Director of Nursing and/or Nurse Manager and department direction in their absence. The supervisor promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization and carries out the essential functions of a Registered Nurse.
EssentialFunctions
- Assess patient care requirements on each unit by making rounds throughout all areas of the hospital (according to departmental needs/activity).
- Ensure departmental staffing plans are implemented appropriately.
- Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems.
- Assist staff to efficiently utilize staffing and other resources to meet patient care requirements and other professional responsibilities.
- Provide immediate follow‑up, documentation and communication of incidents to the appropriate manager and director.
- Respond to emergency situations and assist as necessary.
- Act as a resource in identifying and/or solving administrative/operational problems.
- Contact representatives of departments not presently in the hospital for assistance with problem solving, timely and appropriately.
- Act as a resource, interpret and ensure adherence to hospital and nursing philosophy, policies and procedures.
- Report to the administrator‑on‑call or DON/Nurse Manager any significant incidents and problems such as unusual patient/family problems or concerns, physician concerns, major damage or utility outages, security problems, public relations or media events, fire, disaster, matters of legal importance, calls received from regulatory bodies, or safety issues.
- Provide ongoing timely feedback, verbal and written, to staff on performance in collaboration with DON/Nurse Manager. Assist with providing information necessary for conducting nursing personnel performance evaluations.
- Identify and communicate staff needs for continuing education to the DON/Nurse Manager.
- Provide education, remediation, and assessment of skill competencies as directed by the DON/Nurse Manager.
- Monitor documentation for adherence to rules and regulations.
- Ensure environment of care requirements are met (e.g., quality logs, infection control practices, etc.).
- Utilize the nursing process: assessing, planning, and formulating nursing interventions directed toward development of an individualized plan of care and treatment modalities.
- Identify expected outcomes individualized to the client to include discharge planning; prescribe interventions to attain expected outcomes; evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in relation to expected outcomes; conduct ongoing assessment of clients from admission to discharge; initiate medical/psychiatric crisis intervention to stabilize and ensure the well‑being of the patient’s condition.
- Provide individual patient teaching on all identified learning needs; facilitate family/significant‑other education.
- Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions; implement nursing interventions identified in the plan of care that is individualized to the patient’s needs. Apply appropriate interventions to progress the patient toward wellness and address maintenance of wellness.
- Provide structure and maintain a therapeutic milieu in collaboration with the patient and other health care providers.
- Administer medications as prescribed safely; provide education on prescribed medications; recognize signs and symptoms of adverse drug reactions.
