Job Summary
To provide respiratory care that is patient and family centered in an environment that exemplifies best practice, fosters relationship-based care, and maintains the integrity of professional respiratory care standards. Respiratory care guidelines are based on the AARC Code of Ethics, Indiana Respiratory Care Practice Act, regulatory agencies, and evidence‑based standards by which the Registered Respiratory Therapist provides patient care. Demonstrate competence in respiratory therapy assessment and treatment modalities, life support certifications, problem solving, critical thinking, and priority setting.
Recognize the need for professional growth and take appropriate steps towards meeting educational needs.
- Perform comprehensive age‑specific assessments and re‑assessments.
- Collaborate with significant others, family members, and other health‑care providers to obtain complete medical history. Document assessment findings according to unit policy.
- Identify actual or potential physical, psychosocial, cultural, and religious, safety, infection control, environmental, and/or teaching needs.
- Prioritize patient care according to assessment findings.
- Interpret assessment findings and prepare patient/family care and education accordingly.
- Collaborate with other health‑care providers regarding the plan of care and discharge/transfer plans.
- Develop an individualized plan of care/education based on standards of care/practice to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Revise plan of care based on patient physical and emotional changes and/or needs.
- Revise plan of care based on patient, family, and significant others' input.
- Provide age‑specific patient care based on plan of care, patient needs, and priorities.
- Utilize evidence‑based interventions and treatments specific to the diagnosis or problem.
- Utilize community resources and systems to implement the plan of care and coordinate access to appropriate resources.
- Collaborate with other caregivers to implement the plan of care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory care interventions.
- Evaluate patient response in relation to expected outcomes.
- Evaluate patient response to other health‑care provider interventions.
- Revise plan of care based on evaluations of respiratory care interventions/treatments.
- Evaluate patient/significant other response to teaching.
