Job Summary

The Dean of Arts and Sciences has primary responsibility for the supervision, direction, coordination, and evaluation of all academic and technical programs, personnel, and other areas designated by the Vice President of Instruction. The Dean provides leadership in the ongoing development of an innovative and current curriculum that prepares students for transfer and career opportunities; fostering collaboration across disciplines to promote faculty partnerships and deep learning through learning communities, service, cooperative learning, and other proven pedagogical strategies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan, administer, supervise, and evaluate the Division of Arts & Sciences programs and course offerings.
  • Provide leadership and vision for the creation and implementation of a strategic plan for credit and technical programs offered within the division.
  • Develop and implement new programs and courses within the division in response to the needs of the community.
  • Act as the instructional leader for the division in the development, assessment, and revision of curricula, program outcomes, and student learning outcomes in collaboration with faculty.
  • Interact with community groups, local school districts, businesses, and industry regarding their specific training needs.
  • Assist in the development and writing of proposals.
  • Provide recommendations to the Vice President for Instruction for the employment, assignment, evaluation, and professional development of all full‑time and adjunct faculty within the division.
  • Verify and approve faculty credentials within the division in collaboration with the Vice President.
  • Participate in faculty and committee activities.
  • Review, maintain, and evaluate the divisional budget and direct, in collaboration with the Vice President of Instruction, the appropriation of funds and expenditures related to programs and courses.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise policies and procedures relating to the division in collaboration with the Vice President of Instruction.
  • Lead the process for systematic program review and evaluation as per the model adopted by the college for the division.
  • Participate in the development of outcomes, monitor assessment of those outcomes, and assist in the development of action plans for improvement based on assessment results.
  • Develop and maintain positive partnerships with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), the Texas Workforce Commission, local workforce boards, local economic development agencies, program advisory committees, businesses, industry, school districts, and other governmental, community, and educational institutions.
  • Develop marketing and promotional strategies for programs and courses within the division in collaboration with the College’s Office of Marketing and Communications.
  • Work with faculty and staff to resolve student issues and complaints in compliance with college policies and procedures.
  • Attend the workplace regularly, report to work punctually, and follow a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the job.
  • Complete duties and responsibilities in compliance with college standards, policies, and guidelines.
  • Use interpersonal skills and make sound judgments to determine how duties and responsibilities are completed between coworkers, the supervisory chain, faculty, staff, students, and customers.
  • Complete all required training and professional development sessions sponsored by Texas Southmost College.
  • Support the values and institutional goals as defined in the College’s Strategic Plan.
  • Participate in all commencement ceremonies.
  • Work hours may include evenings, holidays, or weekends depending on deadline requirements and special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • A strong commitment to the mission of the community college.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum and program development and evaluation, needs assessment, and marketing of courses and programs within the division.
