Department Chair – Construction, Manufacturing, Transportation & Technology

The Department Chair reports directly to the Divisional Dean and the Office of Instruction, providing academic, program, and department leadership to support Texas Southmost College’s transfer and career and technical programs. The role serves as a mentor to faculty, collaborates with college administrators, interprets college policy, advocates for the department, and leads curriculum and student learning processes through effective communication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, plan, and implement department objectives that support the college’s mission, goals, and strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with the divisional dean and Vice President of Instruction to develop and assign class schedules that best serve students.
  • Work with faculty on assessment at classroom, program, and department levels, including program reviews and student evaluation of faculty.
  • Assist the divisional dean in implementing academic policy.
  • Maintain the department website, ensuring accuracy and currency, and oversee changes and updates.
  • Resolve student issues related to courses, curricula, and other academic matters in accordance with college procedure.
  • Facilitate procurement of textbooks and recommend equipment and supplies for purchases.
  • Supervise faculty and staff attendance, time commitments, and work assignments.
  • Evaluate full‑time and part‑time faculty following TSC policies and procedures.
  • Complete required training and professional development sessions sponsored by the College.
  • Support the values and institutional goals defined in the College’s Strategic Plan.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong commitment to quality teaching, student success, and completion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of college academic and instructional functions.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, and revision.
  • Ability to develop and monitor student learning outcomes and assessment strategies.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
  • Team‑oriented, customer‑service focus.
  • Proficiency in educational technology.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills; ability to work independently.
  • Analytical skills to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and present information.
  • High attention to detail and ability to multi‑task with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.
  • Discretion with sensitive and confidential data.
  • Proficiency with internet, data records, generating reports, and communicating online.
  • Energetic, flexible, and able to meet significant demands.
Required

Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Auto Body Repair, Automotive Technology, Commercial and Residential Electrician, Construction Technology, HVAC, Advanced Manufacturing, Robotics and Automation, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience in higher education.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Excellent customer‑service and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university.
Certificates and Licensures

None required.

Physical Demands

Employee frequently stands, walks, sits, uses hands to handle tools, and may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds routinely, with occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. The role requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
