Overview

Perform manual custodial maintenance of buildings and miscellaneous related services during night shifts. Responsibilities include routine cleaning, sanitation, equipment maintenance, inventory control and occasional supervision of other custodial personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Provide routine general cleaning in all restrooms at the start of the shift, including restocking supplies, trash removal, disinfection of high‑touch areas, and spot mopping as needed.
  • Complete full‑service cleaning before end of shift, replacing trash bags, restocking supplies, disinfecting toilets and high‑touch areas, sweeping, mopping, and removing floor trash.
  • Clean all non‑office areas nightly, including wiping down furniture, trash removal, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.
  • Clean all offices once a week (Thursday) with general cleaning, trash removal, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and wiping down of surfaces.
  • Wash interior windows quarterly as needed or per request.
  • Polish furniture and equipment as needed in all areas.
  • Perform general cleaning of all buildings, including entrance exteriors, drinking fountains, and other areas daily.
  • Assist in preparing areas for meetings, events, seminars, and other university functions.
  • Recycle and dispose of appropriate materials.
  • Mentor and train new employees and delegate work assignments; ensure completion within established time frames.
  • Advise employees of departmental changes, special assignments, or work routines.
  • Assist in inventory control and distribute requested materials.
  • Work flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime on projects/events, or emergencies.
  • Carry a two‑way radio and be available on an on‑call basis as required.
  • Maintain and service custodial equipment after each use.
  • Complete assigned work orders during the shift as directed.
  • Participate in mandatory or assigned training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Receives general supervision with detailed instructions on special assignments. Occasionally supervises assigned custodial personnel.

Education & Experience
  • Required

    Education:

    Completion of 6th grade; ability to read and write English to understand MSDS, work orders, time cards, and oral and written instructions.
  • Preferred Education: High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Required Experience: One (1) year as a Building Attendant I or equivalent.
  • Preferred Experience: Two (2) or more years as a Building Attendant I or equivalent in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of janitorial equipment and its care/maintenance requirements.
  • Authorized to operate a University‑Owned Vehicle for official university business and must pass a motor vehicle record check (36‑month history).
Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to perform all essential functions and duties, including stooping, bending, kneeling, walking, lifting, and carrying objects up to 50 lbs alone and up to 100 lbs with help. Must be able to climb step ladders and maintain balance to clean and wash windows and lighting. Some exposure to inclement weather when moving between buildings and emptying trash.

Working

Conditions

Primary night and weekend schedule, with possibility of rotating work across multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Exposure to chemicals, hazardous waste, and other conditions may occur in a university office building environment.
