Part Time Detention Officer – Brownsville, TX
AIP is looking for a Part Time Detention Officer in Brownsville, TX. The Detention Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of detainees in custody, acting in accordance with the highest ethical standards and maintaining a spirit of fairness in all duties. The officer will serve unarmed posts inside the Port Isabel Detention Center, directly supervising, protecting and securing detainees within the facility secure perimeter.
Responsibilities- Conduct security and sanitation checks of the area prior to relieving the outgoing officer and throughout the shift.
- Inventory all equipment and note the results in the logbook.
- Receive all authorized equipment and ensure it is in proper working condition.
- Ensure radio communication equipment is in good working order with a fully charged battery.
- Perform duties related to the detention, processing, safeguarding, security, and escort of detainees as required in the contract.
- Exercise surveillance and control over detainees, maintaining order and discipline.
- Attend to housing, feeding, and the physical well‑being of detainees, 24 hours a day.
- Make official entries in the assigned post logbooks that are accurate, legible and complete.
- Enforce rules and regulations of the detention facility.
- Provide care, custody, and control of detainees.
- Remove detainees from holding areas using proper restraints and security measures.
- Supervise detainees at deportation or exclusion hearings, during transport, while receiving medical care and during other duties as assigned.
- Arrive on time for assigned shifts wearing full issued uniform and complying with dress code.
- Follow company-wide safety policies and practices, and adhere to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting, and monitoring as outlined in company safety policies.
- Successfully complete all assigned training, including defensive tactics and courses requiring minimum physical stamina.
- Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with organization policies and procedures.
- Meet all health requirements.
- Citizenship:
United States. - High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Pass a criminal background and consumer credit check (no criminal record or poor credit history).
- Obtain and maintain a DHS/ICE government clearance.
- Pass all pre‑employment and random drug tests.
- Pass a medical examination and meet health requirements as a continued condition of employment.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid state driver's license.
- Obtain and maintain a state security guard license.
- Ability to greet and deal tactfully and professionally with the general public.
- Read, write, speak proficiently in fluent English.
- Proficient at observation, memory of events, and ability to document events in written reports.
- Capable of following, interpreting, and understanding written and verbal orders, policies and regulations, printed rules and regulations, detailed written orders, and training instructions.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, courage, alertness, an even temperament, and render satisfactory performance through responsibilities.
- Maintain poise and self‑control during potential emergencies and unexpected situations involving mental and physical stress.
- Maintain professional appearance, calm demeanor, and discretion with confidential information.
- Possess a high degree of integrity, accountability and adhere to the American Correctional Association and DHS ICE Performance Based National Detention Standards.
- Demonstrate ability to work with a diverse population of people, including diverse cultures and lifestyles, with a cross‑cultural perspective.
- Maintain residence in the continental United States.
This position requires the candidate to pass a pre‑employment physical, maintain physical fitness standards and be willing and capable of the following physical requirements:
- Walk through all areas of the facility for tours of duty in varied (sometimes extreme) weather conditions.
- Stand, sit, walk, and bend for extended periods of time.
- Respond quickly during emergency situations, including jogging and fast walking to incidents.
- Work without restrictions or limitations.
- Lift heavy objects up to 50 lb frequently and up to 70 lb occasionally.
- Push a wheelchair‑bound individual weighing up to 300 lb and assist them in and out of the chair.
- Bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, reach, and climb stairs, ladders and slopes periodically.
- Strictly maintain physical fitness standards for a law‑enforcement related position throughout employment.
- Perform CPR and render assistance when needed.
