Job Summary

The Equipment Operator III is responsible to operate complex heavy equipment necessary in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of facilities. The Equipment Operator III is responsible for crew leadership, routine maintenance procedures, safe and effective loading and operation, and storage. The Equipment Operator III works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills
  • Must be able to read, interpret and follow work orders and procedures as necessary.
  • Must be able to effectively respond to questions from Management, groups of managers, customers, and the public.
  • Knowledge of more complex work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to operate higher-level specialized equipment.
  • Operates specialized equipment, machinery or vehicles, such as heavy construction vehicles, trucks with hydraulic pumping equipment, pressure sprayers, paving equipment, jackhammers, backhoes, or cranes.
  • Operates light equipment and tools, such as blowers, edging tools, sprayers, shovels, rakes, and brooms.
  • Removes debris, litter, earth, or pavement; loads material into trucks; locates and excavates underground structures or pipelines; sets poles; clears land or mows grassy areas, such as parks, playgrounds, medians, roadsides and hillsides.
  • Repairs existing systems, and structures, such as water, sewer, or gas mains, fire hydrants, roadways, or buildings; clears obstructions from pipelines; repairs or cleans structures, and surfaces, including removing graffiti.
  • Inspects equipment to ensure safe operations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment and tools.
  • Assembles and loads equipment, tools, materials and supplies according to daily work assignments.
  • Follows established safety rules and regulations for the safe operation of equipment and machinery, reports accidents, equipment breakage and unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
  • Determines amount and type of materials, equipment and/or tools necessary to complete tasks; assigns work; supervises and instructs others.
  • Completes routine documents and forms, such as work orders, repair requests, reports and logs.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduation or GED plus one year of experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Job requires a current, valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License, as required by State Law for the operation of heavy machinery and trucks.

Independence & Judgement

Average judgment; must recognize and resolve problems such as bad grammar, type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination, when to change or sharpen blade on mower, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.
