Position: Public Safety Officer (Non-Commissioned, Non-Peace Officer Position)

Job Summary

The officer supports the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) mission to provide students, employees, and guests of the university with a safe and secure environment in which to study, work, and enjoy programs offered by the university.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide safety and security services based on proven Christian integrity and ethics consistent with the University Mission Statement.
  • Provide general customer service.
  • Provide general support and emergency response services.
  • Complete daily shift log reports.
  • Maintain constant contact with others via cellular telephone and/or radio.
  • Issue university parking violation warnings and citations.
  • Guard university and personal property against damage, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry by performing the following duties:
    • Routine patrol of buildings and grounds of the university on foot or in patrol vehicles.
    • Examine doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure.
    • Warn violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and report to the Chief / Director of University DPS and/or local law enforcement agencies.
    • Inspect equipment and machinery to determine if tampering has occurred.
    • Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes or other building safety hazards, and security doors left unlocked.
    • Observe individuals to guard against theft of university property.
    • Sound alarm or call the police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or illegal activities.
    • Allow authorized persons to enter the property.
    • Record data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning machinery or equipment, for use of supervisory staff.
    • Respond to calls for service. Take incident/offense reports and initiate the investigations of incidents/offenses.

    Physical Demands

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms, stand, sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and taste or smell.

    The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    Work Environment

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals used in the routine cleaning and maintenance of university buildings and grounds;

    risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Qualifications
  • Education and/or Experience – High school diploma or GED required; prior public safety experience in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Relational Skills – Pleasant demeanor, positive attitude, kindness in interactions with others and a customer service mindset.
  • Language Skills – Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to students, guests, and employees of the university.
  • Math Skills – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability – Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions and to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer Skills – Working knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and commonly used Internet browsers.
  • License – Maintain a current Texas driver’s license; must be at least 21 years of age to drive any university vehicle.
  • Work Schedule Requirements – Part‑time officers are assigned a variable work schedule that may be altered to meet the needs of the department, including accommodations for special university events, emergencies, staff sick leave, vacation, holiday leave, and emergency leave.
