General Description
Provides supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility. The role helps youth achieve progress in learning and applying methods to identify and manage reactions to stress and trauma.
Responsibilities include facilitating unit programming, schedule, and safety protocols; maintaining safe environments; interacting and engaging with youth appropriately; and working with individual treatment plans.
Essential Functions- Engage in competency‑based training to coach youth under the Texas Model of trauma‑informed corrections.
- Hold youth accountable in ways that fit their level of behavior and help them learn socially acceptable responses and approaches.
- Use good judgment to determine when safety is at risk and when higher levels of intervention are required.
- Help youth identify their responses to stress, fear, and other triggers and work with them to develop emotional self‑regulation skills.
- Practice and model appropriate self‑regulation skills and remain calm during times of stress and crisis.
- Gain basic knowledge of each youth’s treatment plan and support learning skills and applying the Texas Model and clinical interventions.
- Coach youth on conflict resolution and facilitate repairs with other youth and staff as appropriate.
- Participate in the Youth Service Team and provide input into each youth’s treatment plan.
- Provide a predictable schedule for youth and exercise independent judgment when altering the schedule while maintaining transparency.
- Monitor youth activities, programs, and behaviors on an individual and group basis.
- Observe and inform staff daily of significant behavioral, medical, social, emotional needs and treatment‑related conditions.
- Provide services to potentially aggressive or combative youth and participate in follow‑up debriefing conversations.
- Must attend the pre‑service training academy and complete on‑the‑job training if newly hired or rehired with a separation of more than 18 months.
- Will not be required to attend the academy if the separation is 18 months or less.
- Position is within the approved TJJD career ladder for Juvenile Correctional Officers.
- Advancement and salary adjustments are based on meeting established eligibility criteria per agency policy.
- Work schedule may require on‑call status and working beyond 40 hours per week; occasional travel may be required.
