The School Counselor - Mental Health Support position will work closely with the building administrative team as well as as the building counseling team to coordinate, facilitate, and implement mental health support services. The School Counselor-Mental Health Support position will provide emotional support and foster a safe and successful learning environment for students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
The primary focus will be on building students' capacity for academic success and positive social and emotional well-being.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Master Degree required
License:
Valid Georgia Certificate in or eligible for a certificate in School Counseling
Physical Activity
Stooping or crouching
Walk and/or stand for prolonged periods of time
Knowledge
Communicates effectively and promotes good public relations with students, teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders
Works with peers/supervisors in a considerate and cooperative manner and assists others when needed
Demonstrates patience and care for students all students
Organizational Skills
Strong facilitation, coaching, conflict resolution and problem solving skills
The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Development and Management of Comprehensive Mental Health Support Program
Provide mental health support to students
Facilitate restorative justice and conflict resolution
Provide crisis assistance (i.e. family death)
Provide mental health resources
Work with Mental Health Coordinator to provide community resources; next steps involving short term and/or long term therapy or intervention; advocacy
Provide small group mental health support (i.e. anger/stress management, girl/boy issues, self-esteem, grief, relationships, etc.)
Address risky behaviors (i.e. alcohol/drug use)
Address depression and anxiety (i.e. suicide ideation)
Address abuse (i.e. physical, emotional, sexual)
Maintain and track documentation of mental health support for students
May provide some academic counseling duty and other duties specific to building needs
Assist in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies
Assist in developing and implementing educational programs, including programs on safety and bullying
Assist parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources
Provides services to students via classroom guidance, individual counseling, group counseling,
Uses all available data (e.g. formative, summative, testing/assessment, standardized) to develop programs and services that meet students' social and emotional needs
Implements school wide prevention/intervention programs to support the emotional, social and behavioral needs of students
Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities that meets students' needs
Incorporates into counseling program life skills that students need to have in order to be successful in the 21st century
Interprets and utilizes student data accurately and appropriately
Develops and implements an appropriate student referral process and follow-up process as needed
Provides individual and group counseling to students with social and emotional needs
Assists teachers, parents/guardians and students and others in interpreting and understanding student data
Utilizes all available technology resources effectively, including Student Information System, in the implementation and monitoring of comprehensive school counseling program
Tier 3, SST, 504, and other student support meetings as it relates to mental health support
Conducts annual program review to evaluate extent of program implementation and effectiveness
Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills
Promotes positive relationship with students, parents, school staff, and community
Utilizes technology and effective communication tools (email/newsletter, website, school messenger, social media, parent nights, etc.), as appropriate, to inform students, parents and other relevant stakeholder groups about programs, interventions, activities and supports
Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator
Security Clearance:
The Glynn County School System requires a criminal background check and fingerprinting on all new employees, including all substitutes and other designated employees.
WORK DAYS:
Elementary School 190 Days
Middle/High School 200 days
COMPENSATION RANGE: $54,685 -$101,240
* FY26/_RW10
* Salary is commensurate with experience and education.
