Substation Automation (SIA) Engineer / Technician (T)

Position based in the Savannah and Brunswick Transmission Maintenance Areas. This is a Non‑Exempt role within the Protection & Control Field Services Engineer/Technician (SIA) family. The successful candidate will perform Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services activities in either the Savannah or Brunswick areas, prioritizing safety and quality while learning and applying switching procedures and safety measures. Projects will be planned and completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and without service interruptions.

• 4‑year bachelor’s degree in engineering, or
• 4‑year BS Degree in Engineering Technology, or
• Professional Engineering License, or
• Equivalent experience in Protection and Control Field Services

• P&C Field Services experience
• Electric power utility transmission construction, maintenance, or operations experience
• Related substation experience (P&C Applications, Design, Construction, Major Equipment, Project Management, etc.)
• Knowledge of communication protocols: SEL, DNP3, TCP/IP
• Knowledge of physical communication media: EIA‑232, EIA‑485, Ethernet, fiber, etc.
• Knowledge of OSI and TCP/IP models
• Knowledge of ethernet switches, terminal servers, I/O devices
• Basic object‑oriented programming skills preferred
• Basic knowledge of computer networks and networking equipment
• SEL RTAC Platform (SEL‑3555, SEL‑3505, SEL‑3532)
• SEL‑3620H/3622 Security Gateway

• Knowledge of 3‑phase power systems, AC/DC Protection & Control Schemes, Fault Analysis
• Familiar with test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communications instruments, and computerized relay test sets
• Ability to solve problems and make decisions while managing projects with multiple priorities
• Ability to communicate across multiple work groups including customers, employees, and leadership
• Familiarity with computer programs including Microsoft Office products (Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint)

• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Participation in callout rotation and availability to respond to outages or abnormal conditions outside normal work hours
• Participation in storm restoration efforts expected
• Overnight travel sometimes required
• Safety sensitive position subject to relevant pre‑employment screening(s)
• Field position requires physical ability to operate manual switches and work in a substation environment
• Must live in/near and be willing to relocate within reasonable distance to the office location
• Must be able to pass the standard Southern Company background check, drug screen, and NERC Background check

• Commissioning, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting communication and control equipment associated with distribution and transmission substations
• Complete assigned projects, ensuring completion without service interruptions and managing schedules to meet quality and budget targets
• Coordinate substation outages and commissioning activities with multiple internal and external stakeholders, handling trouble calls as needed
• Develop and apply safe and efficient work practices to prevent safety and operational incidents, conduct job briefings, and mitigate risks
• Develop and share technical expertise in 3‑phase power, relaying, SCADA, and substation testing techniques with others through daily work
• Understand cybersecurity concepts and support Power Delivery Cybersecurity initiatives
