Under broad supervision, the incumbent in this position will support biological and technical staff during the collection of data used to manage Georgia’s marine fisheries. Primary duties will be supervising a Marine Technician 1 and part-time Natural Resources Workers conducting interviews with marine recreational anglers for the Access Point Angler Intercept Survey (APAIS) at public access fishing sites throughout coastal Georgia.
Responsibilities include managing assignment schedules; data QA/QC; conducting site visits, attending state and coast-wide wave meetings, maintenance of assigned vehicles; accurately identifying southeastern Atlantic marine finfish; collecting data such as species caught, number kept and released, length and weight measurements; strong attention to detail while adhering to rigid survey protocols/deadlines and public outreach and education. A substantial portion of the above will occur during non-traditional work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as well as potentially adverse weather conditions.
Bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university.
OR
Associate’s degree or equivalent coursework (90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours) in Marine Sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university
AND
One year of experience required at the lower level Marine Technician 2 (NRT
051) or position equivalent.
OR
High school diploma or GED
AND
Two years of experience in the Coastal Resources Division as a Marine Technician 2 (NRT
051) or position equivalent.
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Supervisory experience
- Experience conducting surveys (e.g., standardized interviews/questionnaires)
- Experience identifying and/or collecting scientific data for southeastern Atlantic marine fish (e.g., Commercial/recreational fishing industry or research)
- Experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
- Proficiency with electronic data collection (e.g., tablets and online databases)
