OverviewThis position is a non‑hazardous law‑enforcement role located within the County of Sacramento. Responsibilities involve enforcement of vehicle and parking regulations, traffic control during special events and emergencies, and general traffic management throughout the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County. Some duties may be performed at cities that receive law‑enforcement services from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.
Responsibilities- Enforce vehicle code and parking regulations.
- Provide traffic control during special events or emergency situations.
- Manage general traffic and parking control obligations across the county’s unincorporated region.
- Major streets, highways, districts, and points of interest in Sacramento County.
- Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, ratios, and fractions).
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Read and use maps.
- Follow oral and written procedures and directions.
- Maintain courteous and cooperative behavior in adverse situations.
- Learn to operate computers and law‑enforcement software related to the area of assignment.
- Learn to safely operate and maintain equipment used in the performance of duties.
- Apply customer‑service techniques when dealing with people, often in difficult or confrontational situations.
- High‑school graduation or satisfactory completion of a General Education Development (GED) test.
- Full criminal history and background check, including fingerprinting.
- Valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, at the time of appointment.
- Compliance with all applicable background‑check and licensing regulations.
- Stand, walk, and/or sit for long periods of time.
- Move with sufficient agility in and out of vehicles and around high‑traffic work areas.
- Visually distinguish colors and picture resolution quality.
- Work various locations and shifts to provide 24‑7 coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- Wear and maintain a designated Sheriff’s Department uniform.
Military veterans who have served during wartime shall be given preference in initial appointment to County service, subject to meeting basic qualification requirements and achieving an approved passing score on the examination.
