Refrigeration Technician

This position supports second and third shift industrial food processing operations by ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of ammonia-based refrigeration systems. You will inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex refrigeration equipment while upholding strict safety, quality, and regulatory standards. The role requires a strong sense of urgency, a commitment to safety, and a collaborative approach to working with maintenance and operations teams.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial food processing refrigeration systems, with a focus on ammonia refrigeration.
  • Apply principles and theories of industrial ammonia refrigeration to diagnose system issues and recommend effective solutions.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on plant refrigeration equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Read and interpret Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to understand system layout and operation.
  • Demonstrate understanding of and compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) programs related to ammonia refrigeration.
  • Successfully complete and maintain HAZWOPER certification and required annual physicals, and apply this training in daily work.
  • Accurately document work orders, repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Follow all safety, quality, standard operating procedures (SOP), and HACCP standards while performing all tasks.
  • Respond with urgency to refrigeration system alarms and issues that may impact production, product quality, or safety.
  • Collaborate effectively with maintenance and operations teams to coordinate repairs, system changes, and equipment start-up or shut-down.
  • Perform equipment start-up and shut-down procedures in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Use appropriate tools and testing equipment to perform mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic troubleshooting.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with facility standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support overall plant maintenance and reliability.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to work second or third shift, including overtime as needed.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Foundational knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems with a strong willingness to continue developing advanced skills.
  • Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems related to refrigeration equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve most issues within assigned discipline, including mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Experience with equipment start-up and shut-down procedures.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and proper use of industry tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs (Process and Instrumentation Diagrams).
  • Understanding of and compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) programs.
  • Ability to accurately document work in a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Demonstrated precision, accuracy, and alertness in work, with strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent attendance record, strong work ethic, and positive attitude.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. intermittently.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience as a maintenance technician in an industrial or food processing environment.
  • Experience in industrial maintenance, including preventive maintenance on complex systems.
  • Hands-on experience with ammonia refrigeration systems and HVAC systems.
  • Familiarity with mechanical systems, pneumatics, and boilers.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience in an industrial setting.
  • Exposure to HACCP standards and food manufacturing quality requirements.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain HAZWOPER certification and complete required annual physicals.
  • Participation in wellness or safety programs is a plus.
