Post-baccalaureate Fellow in AI and Humanity

Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix and a Bowdoin College alumnus, has committed $50 million to launch the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity—the largest gift in the college’s history. This transformative initiative will integrate the study of artificial intelligence with Bowdoin’s liberal arts mission, focusing on its societal, ethical, and humanistic dimensions.

The gift will fund new faculty positions across disciplines, support faculty in AI-related teaching and research, and create programming that fosters dialogue around AI’s role in shaping the future.

As such, Bowdoin College is seeking a Post-baccalaureate Fellow to support the development of the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity (HIAIH). The Fellow will assist with a range of activities, including:

• organizing and executing initiative-sponsored workshops, symposia, and related events
• supporting HIAIH-affiliated faculty and postdoctoral fellows with research and teaching tasks
• helping to develop materials for workshops and courses related to the initiative
• serving as a liaison between the HIAIH and Bowdoin students
• developing multimedia resources and maintaining the initiative’s digital presence
• setting up and troubleshooting AI platforms for demonstrations and faculty use

Please note this is a two-year appointment with an expected start date of July 1, 2025.

• Bachelor’s degree required; if currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent in the undergraduate curriculum is required
• Working knowledge of large language models, generative AI, prompt engineering, and AI ethics necessary to develop instructional guides for faculty implementing AI tools
• Strong ability to work in collaborative relationships with a variety of Bowdoin students, staff members, and faculty
• Ability to quickly learn new skills
• Ability to work independently and without significant supervision
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Intermediate proficiency in Google Suite and Teams/MS Office Suite

• This is an entry-level position
• Practical and/or research experience with artificial intelligence, including college-level coursework, highly preferred

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications in this posting to be considered for hire.

• Based on-site at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, the standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• As a full-time, exempt-level role, this position is a 1.0 FTE working 40 hours/52 weeks and requires the time commitment to complete the essential duties of the position.
