Position Summary
Bowdoin College's Department of Visual Arts invites applications for a full-time benefits-eligible visiting assistant professor position in drawing and painting for the  academic year. The appointment is for one year and begins July 1, 2026, with the possibility of reappointment for a second year, contingent on curricular need and successful review of teaching. The teaching load is two undergraduate courses per semester.

The successful candidate will bring a strong foundation in perceptual, formal, and critical skills, as well as the ability to engage students in the social, cultural, and theoretical dimensions of contemporary art practice. Candidates must have an MFA with two years of full-time teaching experience in higher education or equivalent. Successful candidates will also be able to articulate the significance of the visual arts within the liberal arts curriculum.

1) a cover letter that includes a summary of your scholarly and artistic focus, a description of your teaching philosophy and experience, and a description of how your approach demonstrates a commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching (limit of two pages);

4) a syllabus for a 15-week introductory oil painting class;

The targeted hiring salary range for this appointment based on the position requirements is $73,000 - $77,000.
