Job SummaryThe Chief Investment Officer (CIO) is responsible for optimizing the investment performance of the Bowdoin endowment which provides critical operating support for a distinguished academic experience and meets the financial needs of every accepted student. The CIO has responsibility for day-to-day oversight of the portfolio, manager sourcing and evaluation, investment recommendations, rebalancing, Investment Committee communications and team management. The CIO works closely with the Investment Committee on overall investment strategy and asset allocation policy and manager selection.
In directing the investment function, the CIO will demonstrate leadership and initiative, be collaborative yet decisive, and exercise excellent communication skills. The CIO will bring breadth of knowledge across asset classes and a well-developed understanding of portfolio construction, risk management and the capital markets. Most importantly, the CIO will lead Bowdoin in sustaining top tier performance for the endowment.
The CIO and investment team (composed of two directors, two associates, and an administrative assistant) are based in New York City, with a four person operations team in Brunswick, Maine. The CIO travels to Brunswick regularly to collaborate with other members of the senior staff and with colleagues from other divisions of the College.

Education / Skills Requirements- Strong academic credentials / training
- B.A./B.S. (in a relevant field). M.B.A. or M.S. and CFA or CAIA are strongly preferred.
- IDEAL EXPERIENCE Preferably 15 years of relevant investment experience
- Relevant experience at an endowment, foundation, pension, sovereign, family office, investment management firm or wealth management firm.
- Track record of superior investment performance.
- Team management / mentorship experience.
- Experience managing or mentoring a team of investment professionals.
Standard administrative hours are 8:30am - 5:00pm. This is an exempt level position that requires the time commitment to complete the essential duties of the position.
