Job Description
The Area Supervisor, RSU is responsible for supporting the unit outfitting and product integration operations. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), the Area Supervisor, RSU ensures safe, high-quality, and efficient execution of trade work to support ship/unit construction schedules. This role provides technical and resource management and plays a key role in coaching and mentoring Front Line Supervisors to strengthen trade performance and team effectiveness.
SafetyLeadership
- Ensure a safe, clean working environment is always maintained during the construction process. This includes unit setup work with stage builders, carpenter shop, temporary services, and maintaining these items through the build. Also required, is to maintain the same standard for the floor, under, and around the unit ensuring all material is kept neat and organized.
- Responsible for Cost Performance, Plan of Week Development and Execution. Required to be proficient in MKA to understand W/O planning, tracking, material readiness, and proper trade manning.
- Product Plan and WO readiness. Work with Planning 6 weeks prior to product arrival ensuring Major and Mini milestones are developed and the work orders are properly sequenced under the milestones.
- This is part of ensuring an accurately communicated BPR. Also 4 weeks prior to product arrival, all work orders are reviewed for proper budget, and any needed changes are provided to Resource Planning.
- Manage special projects as assigned by management.
- Understand rework drivers and ensure documentation and resolution of issues.
- Work to identify, develop, and implement cost reduction initiatives.
- Coordinate work of multiple supervisors and support functions.
- Coordinate and/or facilitate the resolution of any barriers, either production or pre-production that could impede the achievement of scheduled events.
- Ensure solid turnover process and communication between shifts.
- Mentor Front Line Supervisors by developing their technical knowledge, leadership skills, and ability to execute daily objectives.
- Promote continuous learning and skills development for both supervisors and mechanics.
- Work closely with Production Control to establish and sequence work orders in MACPAC for the assigned area of responsibility.
- Work in accordance with all Union agreements and promote teamwork.
- Ensure the final product is built to all QA requirements and inspection procedures with proper documentation.
- Work to maintain a high level of credibility with customers.
- High School Graduate or GED required.
- Graduate of BIW's Apprenticeship Program or other related education preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years production/shipyard experience required.
- Solid understanding of shipbuilding processes and MACPAC system.
- Solid understanding of union agreement.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage conflict.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multiple priorities.
- Understanding of labor cost reporting.
