Ending Hunger Corps Transitional & Recovery Services VISTA

Helping women and their families have the essential food and resources they need is at the heart of our work in Southern Maine! This VISTA project is based at Saint Andre Home’s Esther Residence program in Saco, Maine. Saco is just minutes away from the renowned Old Orchard Beach and is part of a growing area of Maine for new professionals and families.

This VISTA project is an opportunity to help new services and programming for women and their families in recovery to have the very things they need to be safer and healthier. The work this project entails includes:

  • Helping our team start a community garden for the residents at a transitional and recovery residence
  • Identifying opportunities for how produce from the community garden can also support families in the community
  • Helping our new program identify ways that we can maintain our food resources to support women in recovery from trauma, substances, mental health, and the impacts of incarceration
  • Interacting and engaging with not only our staff but the many community members and clients we see to ensure consistent sharing of information and messaging about available food resources
Member Duties
  • Develop a plan for a community garden
  • Identify best use of community garden for our transitional and recovery residence
  • Identify best use and access of produce from the community garden for our outreach families
  • Assess availability of food resources and access to food resources for our program and for our local families and clients
  • Develop materials that can be utilized within the program about food resources
  • Develop materials that can be utilized for our outreach clients about food resources
