Bowdoin College boasts a student population of almost 2000. Our Dining Services Department makes everything from scratch and is consistently rated in the top 10 for college dining. We have our own butcher shop, bakeshop, and organic garden that supply food to our two dining halls and three retail locations.
Responsibilities- Lead and collaborate with garden student employees and the Bowdoin Organic Garden Club.
- Work closely with faculty, staff, students, and the Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program on garden-related activities.
- Follow organic gardening principles and practices as directed by the Organic Garden Manager to maintain MOFGA certification compliance.
- Supervise student employees during the summer when the Garden Supervisor is unavailable and occasionally lead student volunteers during the academic year.
- Assist with greenhouse work, planting, harvesting, weeding, washing and delivering produce to kitchens, cleaning tools and equipment, and other essential tasks to maintain a thriving organic garden.
Work locations include the Bowdoin gardens at 52 Harpswell Road and South Street.
Hourly rate: $20.25 per hour.
Education/Skills Requirements- High school diploma or GED required
- A valid Driver's license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College's current Motor Vehicle Use Policy (preferred)
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Effective communication skills
- Openness to feedback and willingness to improve work efficiency
- Ability to ask questions and carry out tasks accurately
- Flexibility, patience, and body awareness
- Willingness and ability to work in all weather conditions
- At least six months of manual labor experience required
- No prior gardening experience required; however, preference will be given to applicants with gardening experience
- Experience leading a work crew and working with volunteers strongly preferred
This is an onsite, part-time, non-benefit eligible position working less than 20 hours per week. The ideal start date is May 2026.
