Job Summary
The Security Officer supports the Campus Communications Center and patrols campus by foot, bicycle, or security vehicle. The officer maintains a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, visitors, and property. Sign on bonus of $1,000 available for new employees.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct daily patrols and walkthroughs of campus buildings and grounds, locking/unlocking buildings and inspecting fire and access control alarm systems.
- Monitor building condition, prevent damage or theft, and identify/report hazards such as broken lights.
- Investigate incidents, crimes, and complaints involving the college or its community members, ensuring compliance with regulations and policies.
- Operate the Campus Security Communications Center by monitoring alarms, responding to complaints, and coordinating responses via radio or other means.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of incidents, activities, and communications.
- Complete 5 weeks of initial training, additional training at 6 months, and further training throughout the year (e.g., de‑escalation trainings).
- Hourly rate: $21.35 per hour (adjusted based on experience).
- Eligible for overtime, 10% shift differential, and weekend differential.
- Third‑shift differential (15%): 11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m. ($3.15 additional per hour).
- Weekend differential: $1.00 per hour on Saturday and Sunday.
- Sign‑on bonus: $1,000 paid at 90 days for new employees.

- High school diploma or GED equivalent required; associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the college’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
- Attendance at a Campus Security Officer Academy.
- Working knowledge of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems.
- Ability to work 120 hours over 18 months as a Bowdoin College Security Officer I (1,040 hours of Museum Security Officer may count).
- Demonstrated proficiency in patrol and communications center operations (minimum 96 hrs annually). Ability to maintain an approved area of special expertise.
- Ability to design, implement, and maintain a community‑service project that enhances campus safety.
- Successful completion of Maine Campus Security Online Training Center courses.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications in this posting to be considered for hire.
Working Hours & ScheduleFull‑time, 40 hours per week for 52 weeks (1.0 FTE).
Typical schedule:
third shift, 11 p.m.–7 a.m., with Wednesdays and Thursdays off. Additional hours may be required for shift coverage, weekend work, blackout days, and during weather emergencies or significant college events.
