CNC Machinist – Tool and Die / CNC Lathe Operator
Location:
Brunswick, Ohio
Compensation: $20+/hr (Negotiable Based on Experience)
Employment Type:
Full-Time
Job Summary:
We are in need of a CNC Lathe Operator with the ability to program, set up, and operate CNC lathes to manufacture precision-machined components in a Tooling Environment – NOT high-volume production. This is a hands-on role ideal for a machinist who enjoys working on small batches and unique part runs. The position also includes responsibilities for short-run vertical machining center operations in a tool and die setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program, set up, and operate CNC lathes to produce precision tooling and low-volume components.
- Set up and operate CNC mills, including vertical machining centers, for tool and die or short-run manufacturing jobs.
- Interpret blueprints and technical drawings to determine specifications and part requirements.
- Machine one part at a time, ensuring each piece is precise and within tight tolerances.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on CNC machines to ensure smooth operations.
- Use micrometers, calipers, and other precision tools to inspect finished parts for accuracy.
- Edit and adjust CNC programs as needed for tooling changes or improved performance.
- Perform occasional manual machining and assist with custom or one-off parts.
- Collaborate with other machinists, toolmakers, and engineers on job planning and process improvement.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of experience operating and setting up CNC lathes and CNC mills (especially vertical machining centers).
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, and blueprints.
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
- Familiarity with minor program editing and G-code adjustments.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Must be detail-oriented with a focus on producing high-quality, accurate work.
- Having your own basic tools is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in tool and die, prototype machining, or short-run production.
- Experience with 3D surfacing or manual machining.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a job shop environment.
- Basic knowledge of CAD/CAM or conversational programming is a plus.
Work Environment:
This is a custom, low-volume machining environment where setups vary daily, and precision is key. Projects are rarely repeated and require flexibility, attention to detail, and craftsmanship. You'll work on a range of tooling, fixtures, and specialty components rather than high-volume production parts.
