Job Summary
Under general supervision, this internship position performs responsible work in support of various activities for the City Manager's Office and other departments throughout the city. The purpose of this position is to provide the selected candidate with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of disciplines related to local government operations. Responsibilities require frequent contact with City management and various internal staff, public officials, other agencies/organizations, and the general public.
Essential Job Functions
* Assists with projects for the City Manager's Office and other City Departments as assigned.
* Communicates the status of various projects and assignments on a timely basis.
* Provides administrative support such as performing research, collecting and analyzing data, assisting with the creation of studies and surveys, writing or editing memos and correspondence, developing forms, maintaining databases and records, evaluating websites, participating in meetings, creating or assisting with presentations, producing reports, developing or revising policies and procedures, and assisting with general data entry.
* Works on special projects or performs other related duties as assigned.
* Attends meetings as needed. May be required to take notes and/or assist with meeting coordination.
* Performs related duties as required.
* Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be in a current college student in a graduate or professional degree program majoring in Public Administration, Business, Political Science, Economics, or a similar field of study.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
* Municipal government methods.
Ability to:
* Perform work based on broad instructions and general supervision.
* Prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands, and meet established deadlines.
* Work under steady pressure with frequent interruptions and a high degree of public contact by phone or in person.
* Perform a variety of administrative work including composing/editing a variety of routine to moderately complex correspondence, reports, forms, presentations, and other documents, updating websites, and performing general data entry. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook) and able to promptly learn other job-specific programs as needed.
* Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive files, data, and materials accessed, discussed, or observed while working with City staff.
* Compile and maintain accurate and complete records.
* Present a professional appearance and demeanor.
* Demonstrate good judgment and personal initiative.
* Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and attendance.
* Abide by City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
* Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the incumbent's area of responsibility.
* Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
Skills:
* Advanced skills in operating office equipment and machinery.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.
* Strong spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills.
* Strong customer service skills over the phone and in-person
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
Licenses, Certifications &
Special Requirements
Texas Class C driver's license with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system.
