OVERVIEW

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for carrying out the educational program when a regular teacher is absent. They provide instruction, maintain classroom routines, and maximize students' learning experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide meaningful instruction to students in assigned classrooms.
• Review and implement the regular teacher's routines, procedures, lesson plans, and curriculum objectives.
• Establish and maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.
• Report any student injuries, illness, and serious discipline problems to the school administration.
• Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
• Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
• Supervise students' fieldwork, internship, and research work.
• Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
• Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
• Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or assign this work to others.
• Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
• Issue written and oral instructions; assign duties and examine work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties as directed by the school administration.
• Other duties as assigned or as become evident.

Language, Math and Reasoning

• Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
• Write simple correspondence.
• Present information effectively in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and employees.
• Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
• Compute rate, ratio, and percent and draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
• Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING

Minimum high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

COMPUTER SKILLS

Excellent skills in Microsoft Windows.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
• The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands/fingers, and reach with hands and arms.

VISION REQUIREMENTS

• Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
• Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
• Ability to adjust focus to bring an object into sharp focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works in an environment with moderate noise level, such as a business office with computers and printers, light traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
