Job OverviewThe Wireless Systems Research Engineer III or IV or Senior Wireless Systems Research Engineer I, under general direction, is responsible for conducting and supporting basic and applied research on wireless networks. This role utilizes knowledge of existing wireless networks to design, implement, and test creative and innovative solutions to new and emerging challenges in next generation wireless networks. The primary responsibilities include supporting research initiatives within the field of wireless networking and serving as subject matter expert on research projects.
Responsibilities- Research Proposals (5%) – Conduct evaluation and analysis of technical approaches to research opportunities; evaluate equipment, protocols, designs, procedures, and tools; produce network designs and other technical aspects for proposal submission.
- Network Design and Documentation (15%) – Establish standards and plans for new or upgraded research networks; collect and evaluate input from researchers, systems administrators, contractors, and vendors; design activities, recommend network designs, establish standards and processes for detailing network engineering designs; design system security measures, configuration backup, and security methods.
- Network Configuration, Installation, and Testing (20%) – Collaborate with research team and develop work plans and schedules; help establish standards for implementation of new technology deployments and network integration testing; configure, install, and test research networks; certify projects to required design standards.
- Network Research, Operations, and Support (20%) – Establish protocols and processes for problem management and support; provide Tier I, II, and some Tier III support; diagnose and repair complex hardware and software issues; monitor effectiveness of processes; perform security assessments and audits; implement security measures, backup, and protection; develop disaster recovery plans; support researchers with data gathering; travel to campus and vendor locations as needed.
- Research Project Presentations and Reporting (15%) – Contribute to monthly/quarterly updates to project sponsors; prepare reports and presentations; collect technical updates; assist with deliverable reports; assist with industry symposia presentations.
- Training and Development (10%) – Stay abreast of emerging technologies; engage in ongoing training; lead and develop Graduate Assistant Non‑Teaching and Student Technicians; provide professional development and training.
- Supervision and Training (10%) – Recruit, hire, and supervise student teams; lead and coach Graduate Assistant Non‑Teaching and Student Technicians; model ethical and performance standards; oversee personnel issues; conduct professional development trainings; emphasize leadership, management, and project operations.
- Other Duties (5%) – Perform additional assigned tasks as needed.
- Wireless Systems Research Engineer III – Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience; six years of wireless networking related experience.
- Wireless Systems Research Engineer IV – Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience; eight years of wireless networking related experience.
- Senior Wireless Systems Research Engineer I – Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience; nine years of related experience.
- Ability to obtain Secret‑level U.S. security clearance based on a background investigation.
- Ability to obtain a U.S. passport and travel domestically and internationally.
- LANs and L2 switching – copper, fiber, Wi‑Fi, VLANs, spanning tree.
- IP networking and L3 switching/routing – IP subnetting, direct, static, and dynamic routing.
