Purpose and Scope
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines and assisting in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
PrincipalDuties and Responsibilities
- Assist other health care members in providing patient‑specific education regarding adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease processes.
- Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
- Obtain vital signs, weight, and perform pre‑ and post‑treatment evaluations.
- Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
- Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy and provide interventions as prescribed or directed.
- Discontinue dialysis treatment, evaluating the patient prior to termination of venous access and applying appropriate dressings for hemostasis.
- Record accurate vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
- Ensure safety alarms are enabled and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy.
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens, ensuring proper labeling and storage.
- Prep and label, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent waste.
- Assist in training of direct patient care staff under RN supervision.
- Enter all treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and timely.
- Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensuring nursing signatures are documented.
- Prepare initial patient chart for admission and compile paperwork for appropriate placement.
- Prepare and print laboratory requisitions for prescribed specimens.
- Assist in collecting information for infection control audits.
- Follow infection control policies and reinforce education of patients and families.
- Coordinate care for newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis.
- Reinforce education and care related matters, ensuring all disciplines see patients on schedule.
- Assist in ensuring patient understanding of home dialysis benefits and options.
- Assist in supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
- Employee is required to take the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
- Frequent, prolonged periods of standing and lifting patients up to 40 lbs. and solutions up to 30 lbs.
- Work environment includes moderate noise levels and exposure to infectious materials.
- High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Must obtain CMS‑approved state or national certification within the required timeline.
- All appropriate state licensure, education, and training (if any) required.
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting preferred.
- Completion of the organization’s dialysis training program required.
- CPR certification required.
- Demonstrated commitment to organization culture and customer‑service standards.
