POSITION

PURPOSE:

The Geographic Information Systems Technician I performs entry-level to routine technical GIS work in support of the regional 9-1-1 GIS program and other agency GIS-related activities, as assigned. Work involves assisting with GIS data entry, spatial data maintenance, map production, basic data validation, GPS data processing, and related records maintenance for Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Washington counties.

This position supports the maintenance of 9-1-1 GIS data in compliance with applicable standards, rules, policies, and guidelines. Work is performed under close to moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This is a non-supervisory role and reports to the GIS Program Supervisor and/or designee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The duties below describe the primary work expected of the position. Related duties may be assigned when they reasonably support the role.

GIS Data Entry

  • Enters, updates, and maintains GIS data and related records in approved GIS databases.
  • Assists with maintaining address points, road centerlines, emergency service boundaries, and other GIS layers used for regional 9-1-1 operations.
  • Compiles geographic data from GPS collection, county submissions, aerial imagery, existing maps, field notes, and other approved sources.
  • Performs routine edits and corrections to improve data accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Identifies basic mapping or data issues and refers complex discrepancies to the GIS Program Supervisor.

Mapping and GIS Production Support

  • Creates and updates basic print maps, digital maps, graphics, diagrams, and related GIS products.
  • Assists with preparing map packages, validation files, and other GIS materials used by public safety partners, PSAPs, counties, and internal staff.
  • Supports routine GIS exports, data formatting, and file preparation for review and submission.
  • Maintains organized GIS files, project folders, map documents, and supporting materials.

NG911 Data Quality Support

  • Assists with routine review of 9-1-1 GIS data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards and procedures.
  • Supports validation of address points, road centerlines, boundaries, and related GIS records.
  • Assists with correcting errors identified through quality control reviews, county submissions, or validation reports.
  • Supports maintenance of GIS data used for NG9-1-1, public safety mapping, and regional 9-1-1 database workflows.

GPS and Field Data Support

  • Assists with GPS data collection, processing, review, and integration into GIS datasets.
  • Supports field verification activities when needed throughout the region.
  • Reviews collected field data for completeness before it is entered into GIS systems.
  • Maintains basic records related to field collection, source materials, and data updates.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintains basic documentation, metadata, logs, and records related to GIS procedures and datasets.
  • Assists with tracking assigned work, data corrections, map requests, and project-related updates.
  • Participates in training, continuing education, and professional development required for the position.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the GIS Program Supervisor, Program Manager, or designee.
