Job Summary:
Operates a heavy motorized collection vehicle for the transport of dewatered sludge for disposal and assists in the operation of a wastewater treatment system for the City of Bryan.
- Operates and maintains roll-off vehicle, dump truck, and backhoe to transport processed sludge for disposal.
- Enters and exits the truck multiple times throughout the day to secure loads and check equipment.
- Assists in sludge processing through operation of belt press and grease plant.
- Assists in general duties associated with maintenance and operation of wastewater treatment plant.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Responds regularly and promptly to work.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least three (3) years of work experience, preferably involving driving a large vehicle and/or heavy equipment.
- Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Learn job-related procedures and techniques, primarily through verbal instruction, observation, and on-the-job training.
- Perform work independently based on broad instructions and general supervision.
- Make sound judgments within established guidelines.
- Safely and efficiently operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and materials used in performing essential functions.
- Initiate positive and appropriate corrective action in the event of a sudden accident or equipment failure.
- Climb in and out of trucks and/or other heavy equipment throughout the work day.
- Read maps, road signs, instructions, and manuals.
- Respond to customer inquiries politely and professionally.
- Demonstrate collaborative, respectful, and productive work habits.
- Observe and analyze situations quickly and objectively and, using good judgment, determine an effective and efficient course of action with due regard to the task, hazards, and circumstances.
- Remain constantly alert and aware of any workplace hazards and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
- Comply with all City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and the initiative to broaden skills and take on new responsibilities.
- Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance and utilize leave responsibly to ensure sufficient coverage of departmental operations.
- Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the incumbent’s area of responsibility.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
Special Requirements
- Texas Class B commercial driver’s license with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.
- Must obtain Wastewater Class D Operator License and Wastewater Class C License within the time frame set by the department.
- Must successfully pass an annual pulmonary function test and respirator fit test to determine ability to function while wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) during emergency operations.
Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, and using hands and fingers to operate equipment and to lift or move objects up to 80 pounds, or more with the use of proper equipment.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in a plant environment with exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions, inclement weather, temperature extremes, noise, vibration, traffic, moving mechanical parts and equipment, rough/uneven/slippery surfaces, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, toxic/caustic chemicals, odors, fumes, dust, dirt, pollen, and other airborne pollutants.
EquipmentWork may include roll-off truck, dump truck, backhoe, belt press, water pump, handheld radio and various other hand and power tools.
