Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ER RN for a Level III trauma center requiring TNCC, NIHSS, and PALS certifications along with a TX or compact RN license.

Assignment Overview

  • Actual start date is typically 3-4 weeks from time the offer is received. Start dates are determined based on facility needs and credentialing requirements.
Details
  • Level III Trauma Center with Primary Stroke Center (comprehensive capabilities), 30 beds with 2 trauma bays and 24 acute beds
  • Position floats between Bryan and College Station campuses (16 minutes apart)
  • Separate triage area ( first eyes nurse ) and Fast Track/vertical care area; travelers may be assessed for triage placement after time on assignment
  • ER holds and psych/seclusion patients are intermixed within the ER, cared for by ED RNs
  • Average of 135 patients treated daily; approximately 10-15% pediatric population, no pediatric hospital in the community
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by acuity: general acute 1:3-4, Level I trauma 1:1-2, TNK 1:1 for first hour, vertical care 1:6-8
  • Common diagnoses include chest pain, N&V, fever, altered mental status, and trauma (GSW, stabbings, MVAs, falls, ATV accidents)
  • Performs chest tubes, rapid transfusions, and cares for intubated patients
  • Common drips administered include Diltiazem, Cardene, Nitro, Propofol, Fentanyl, and Levophed
  • Uses MEDITECH as well as Pulse Check or Picis charting systems
  • RT staffed in ER 24/7, handling ABGs and sharing breathing treatments with RNs; RNs monitor their own telemetry
  • X-Ray and CT available in the ER with dedicated transporters; phlebotomy staffed in ER 24/7
  • 12-hour day shifts with every other weekend requirement and rotation for 1 major holiday with core staff
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • May float to assist as helping hands without a formal assignment, including floating to College Station as needed
  • Hybrid self-scheduling and block scheduling with scheduler support
Requirements
  • Active TX or compact RN license required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2-3 years of ER RN experience required
  • Experience in a facility with similar patient volume, trauma level, and size required
  • Must pass the Advanced Dysrhythmia exam (83%) prior to signing contract, with up to three attempts allowed
  • Copy of driver's license required at time of consideration, matching legal name on government-issued
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including employment dates and rehire eligibility

  • Provide direct patient care across general acute, trauma, and vertical care areas of a high-volume, high-acuity ER
  • Serves as the region's top trauma center, covering 9 counties with its own EMS agency and helicopter transport
  • Security is in-house 24/7 with an off-duty officer dedicated to the ER
  • Charge nurse is free-floating and may take an assignment while responding to codes and rapid responses on other floors
  • Patient Care Techs support with EKGs, wound care, transport, ADLs, and trauma prep
  • Unit-specific orientation includes 3 shifts in the ER
  • Scrub color requirement: navy, with navy undershirts; scrub jackets optional but must also be navy
  • Call-outs are strongly discouraged and may result in termination
  • May be asked to precept as needed by the unit
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full‑time, part‑time, or PRN) by any Common Spirit‑affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year; PRN employment through outside staffing firms will be considered
