Job Summary

Performs a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled tasks in the maintenance of the City of Bryan park grounds, equipment, and facilities.

Essential Job Functions
  • Plant and maintain landscaped areas, including bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns; water, mow, weed, trim, and fertilize lawns.
  • Rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, courts, and other park facilities; apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides as needed.
  • Inspect and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, barbecue pits, and related parks/recreational equipment; refer issues to appropriate staff.
  • Perform minor maintenance on park facilities such as painting, plumbing, and carpentry work.
  • Operate and maintain landscaping and maintenance equipment, including City vehicles, tractors, backhoes, turf mowers, blowers, weed‑eaters, sprayers, and power tools.
  • Assist in the installation, repair, replacement, and servicing of irrigation systems; inspect systems and report malfunctions.
  • Pick up trash and remove litter from all City parks and grounds; clean and maintain picnic pavilions and park restrooms.
  • Clear debris or leaves by raking or using power blowers to clear walkways, paths, playing fields, courts, and other parks/recreational facilities.
  • Assist in the maintenance of City buildings.
  • Utilize the maintenance work‑order system to prioritize, schedule, and document work activities.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment such as power saws, sanders, drills, air compressors, paint sprayers, and other hand tools required for maintenance work.
  • Assist other maintenance technicians when needed.
  • Adhere to safety and quality‑assurance procedures.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean; maintain shop area and equipment.
  • Assist with custodial work within City buildings and parks.
  • Assist in maintaining parks and preparing athletic fields.
  • Set up and tear down materials and equipment for special events.
  • Adhere to after‑hours, weekend, and holiday standby requirements as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Respond regularly and promptly to work requests.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, facility maintenance, ball‑field preparation, or similar duties.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Perform standardized routines and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Learn job‑related procedures and techniques, primarily through verbal instruction, observation, and on‑the‑job training.
  • Safely and efficiently operate, maneuver, and control equipment, machinery, tools, and materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Work independently based on broad instructions and general supervision.
  • Perform moderate to heavy manual labor outdoors in temperature extremes for extended periods.
  • Identify maintenance needs and take corrective actions.
  • Be alert to safe working practices and workplace hazards; initiate corrective action if an accident or equipment failure occurs.
  • Comply with City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory performance and willingness to take on new responsibilities.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Provide management with sound, positive advice and information concerning responsibilities.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate effectively with the public and required entities.
Licenses, Certifications &

Special Requirements

Texas Class C driver’s license with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, and operating hands and fingers to operate equipment and lift or move objects up to 80 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors. The position is exposed to inclement weather, temperature extremes, rough/uneven terrain, noise, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, chemicals, odors, fumes, dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.

Equipment

Work is performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by relevant agencies and bodies. The employee is responsible for complying with approved working ranges and limitations. Equipment may include shovels, rakes, hand and power tools, mowers, weed‑eaters, edgers, leaf blowers, trimmers, sprayers, trenchers, aerators, dethatchers, tractors, trucks, trailers, and other assorted landscaping equipment.
